Recommended varieties of tomatoes for the Moscow region - my review and reviews about each
"TOMATO SUMMER" AND ITS FRUIT
The unusually warm summer for the Moscow region turned out to be ideal for growing tomatoes in the open field. And not only determinant ones.
And some varieties were frankly surprised.
Due to the considerable number of tomato plantings, more than 90% of the plants ended up in the open field - both determinant and dwarf (gnomes), including indeterminate ones. And very good! It was very hot for the tomatoes in the greenhouse, and the plants shed their first clusters. And in the ground, everything worked out perfectly, and the bushes, even in September, pleased with massive ripe tomatoes.
However, I'd better tell you about everything in order, or rather, I'll try to rank tomatoes by ripening time.
Traditionally, June tomato was the first to ripen in the open field. The variety is standard, low, with medium-sized rounded red fruits. This is a variety for those who like to get the harvest before everyone else and do not like to do pinch. I don't really like its taste, so I keep it rather for collection. We took the first fruits on July 5-10, the main harvest - on July 21-25. It's a bit late, of course, but here we have to take into account that May was cold and I planted plants in open ground quite late.
Soon after June, the fruits of the tomatoes Taras Bulba and Mother-in-law's language ripened. The last variety became the leader in terms of productivity last season.
Plants are indeterminate, with long, pepper-shaped red fruits weighing 100-200 g. The heat only benefited him: as he began to knit, he knitted until September. The trunks were hung with fruits, we ate them fresh and put them in canning.
The early-ripening Longhorn variety also proved to be excellent. The plants are tall, in the open field they set fruit perfectly. It was pleasant to look at the cluster of large oblong-heart-shaped tomatoes, each of which weighed 150-300 g. And eat them too. Their pulp is very tasty, sweet, with fruity notes.
The Indians of the Syzran early ripening, or, as it is also called, Pipochka, and the Tarasenko-2 Hybrid are very similar. Honestly, if you put their fruits on a plate, you can't tell outwardly. Is that Pipochka's skin and flesh are softer, and Tarasenko, it seems to me, is denser. They ripen at about the same time, early ripening. I took the first fruits from the Tarasenko hybrid on July 23-25, and from Pipochka on July 26. Tomatoes are red, plum-shaped with a spout, weighing 70-100 g. Thick, they are good both for canning and fresh consumption. Both varieties produced bountiful harvests both in the greenhouse and in the open field.
Cherry tomatoes began to bear fruit early enough in the open field. As always, Candy Sweet Icicle pleased me with a bountiful harvest. Plants are de-terminated, medium-early ripening. In the ground, they turned out to be shorter (0-5 m) than in the greenhouse. Their elongated creamy fruits with a spout, orange with yellow strokes and stripes, weighing 0-7 g even outwardly look like caramel - and are just as sweet and tasty. I like this variety because you don't have to form a bush, just tie it up. The plant copes with the abundance of fruits quite successfully. Dyke to diseases tomato is resistant. But this year, many tomatoes have had such a problem as fruit cracking. And even on the usually resistant Icicle. I think this is due to a lack of moisture.
The handsome Strawberry Tiger (Strawberry tiger) is a tall variety that cannot be grown without support, it is so abundantly strewn with fruits. Pink with gold stripes, very beautiful, sweet and tasty tomatoes in the form of an oval plum weighing about 50 g were tied before the cold weather.
Indeterminate tomatoes, including the Tiger, I lead in 2-3, and sometimes even in 4-5 trunks. There are many landings, but there is not enough time to take care of everyone. So the stepson grows up and begins to bloom. It's already a pity to cut it off. But in general, I can note that if the tomato has enough nutrition, then it will cope with so many trunks.
I was pleased with its disease resistance and productivity with the tomato-gnome Gera Shit Kiss (Geranium Kiss). Like many other gnomes, it stands out even externally - it is a low (up to 0 m) bush with very dense dark green foliage. Fruits weighing 7-30 g are collected in large clusters. The tomato is simply strewn with fruits, you don't even need to pinch it, the main thing is to tie it up well, as it knits fruits non-stop. Suitable for salads and canning. In general, I strongly recommend planting dwarf gnome tomatoes in the open field. In the event of a sudden cold snap, you can always cover them - put arcs and throw on a spanbond. Gnomes, including large-fruited ones, grow successfully in buckets and bags, which is very convenient for owners of small plots.
Soon, mid-season varieties began to bear fruit. One of the first ripe fruits this year gave Italians Heart (Heart of Italy / Italian hearts). Luxurious indeterminate beef with beautiful dark pink heart-fruits weighing from 250 g has a classic tomato flavor. It's good in salads, great for sauces and spreads.
One of the tastiest this year was the Amazon Chocolate tomato. Its roundish red-brown fruits with green shoulders weighing 100-300 g have an amazingly sweet taste. The pulp is dense, but at the same time juicy, the tomatoes are very beautiful in the cut. In the open field, he perfectly tied fruits, but in the greenhouse he was much less comfortable. This year, most of the tomatoes growing in the greenhouse, with the exception of the novelties of Daniel Burson, Clean Lake and Serbian Heart, which were hung from bottom to top with fruits, did not tie the fruits in the hands, shall we say, 100%.
I always considered the variety Chocolate Stripes quite late, I was convinced that it would not yield a crop without a greenhouse. However, this summer I was frankly amazed at its productivity and maturation time in the open field. By August 12 - and this is a very early harvest for this variety - we have removed about 5 kg of fruit from the bush. She formed the plants into two trunks, did not leave any more, and was so sure that he would not be in time. But in the greenhouse, plants of the same variety were missed by 2 brushes, and I took the first crop after August 20. By the way, in the open field, the bush knitted until September 15 (not yet ripped out).

To avoid diseases, in tall tomatoes, I cut off the foliage to the first cluster, when the fruits on it are fully grown. As the fruits ripen on the brushes located above, I remove the leaves and above. This provides the plants with good ventilation, and the fruits are all illuminated by the sun. But I did not cut the tops this year: the weather was excellent, and there was no need to stop the tomatoes gaining mass.
And finally, I'll tell you about the new varieties that I grew for the first time. The Irish Stripes (Irish Stripes / Irish stripes) turned out to be a bit similar to the Striped chocolate - both in yield, and great taste, and beauty. Large, weighing up to 300 g, ripening fruits whimsically decorated with red-brown and green stripes. On the cut, they have a deep red-crimson color, and the juice remains contrasting green. I grew it in three trunks.
The second indet, Daniel Burson, is a mid-season, tall variety with a potato-type leaf. Fruits are large, weighing 150-300 g, pink-purple, balanced taste. It is noteworthy that the tomato turned out to be very productive in the open field and in the greenhouse.
And the third tomato - Fresa (Strawberry), medium ripening, indet with pink heart-shaped tomatoes weighing 200-350 g. It formed large fruits early, but there were especially many of them in July-August. But the weather did not favor him - the photo shows unpainted shoulders. Both the heat and the lack of potassium affected. For all the plantings, I simply did not have enough ash for fertilizing. Usually I recommend to everyone and I put the ash in the holes myself, and during the season after the rain I pollinate the tomatoes with ash. Ash is the gardener's best friend, and in particular, the tomato grower.
Tomato Black Amber surprised me with its rich sweet taste of incredibly juicy pulp. The variety is indeterminate, mid-ripening, with flattened, strongly ribbed, violet-brown fruits weighing 100-200 g. Often these varieties have voids inside, but this one turned out to be magnificent - fleshy, juicy, with a stunningly balanced combination of acid and sweetness.
And the last indeterminate variety, which I cannot fail to mention, is Ali Baba. Awesome tomato! I planted several plants in different beds, and everywhere he showed excellent yields. But perhaps the food in the beds was different, so somewhere it began to ripen early, and somewhere later. Sweet, tasty, juicy - I definitely recommend it to lovers of sweet tomatoes. And for those for whom the aesthetics of the fruit is also important: flat-round fruits weighing 200-400 g, dark brown with bronze moire, will undoubtedly decorate any table.
Often people ask me - what do I feed the plants so that they give such a crop? The main nutrients of tomatoes are obtained from manure, ash and nettle infusion with yeast and ash. Rotten manure, or rather chicken droppings, since I keep chickens and this fertilizer is in abundance, I put it in the holes. And I also mulch the soil surface under the plants with the "waste" straw from the chicken coop.
According to many years of observations, I can say with confidence that tomatoes grown in open ground are tastier than greenhouse ones. True, there is more trouble with them: it is more difficult to regulate temperature and humidity. But the most unpleasant thing is when hot weather abruptly changes to cold or rainy. If the leaves of plants remain wet for a long time (from fog, dew or rain), then here are all the prerequisites for the development of phytophtho-rose. And the main thing here is not to give up and fight.
There are many drugs to combat late blight. Over the years, Bordeaux liquid and Hom have helped me, as well as a drug with d.v. azoxystrobin. I carry out the first treatment a few weeks after planting seedlings in open ground, and the subsequent ones - depending on weather conditions. And of course, I try to cut the foliage on time. When the fruits on the first brush gain weight, I remove the leaves below it. In the future, I cut off the foliage as needed. Also, for the prevention of diseases, I try to plant tomatoes in another place every year, observe crop rotation. Here, however, there is nothing you can do about the greenhouse. I have only two of them, and to disinfect the soil after harvesting tomatoes, I sow white mustard.
