HOW TO GROW TOMATO SEEDLINGS WITHOUT A BLACK LEGS - MY SECRETS AND TIPS
Is there a way to grow tomatoes that protects plants from possible diseases and at the same time provides an excellent harvest? It looks like the author of the article found the answer to this question. Let's get acquainted.
I want to tell you about tomatoes, however, a lot has already been written about them, but everyone tries to grow them in their own way.
Tomatoes are one of the most valuable vegetable crops, containing a large amount of sugar, malic and citric acids, as well as provitamins A, C, B1, B2. This is a southern heat-loving and moisture-loving plant, therefore the optimum daytime temperature is from 18 ° to 27 °, and at night from 12 ° to 15 °, even slight frosts down to -1 are detrimental.
Lighting also affects the quality of the crop, because the light accelerates the growth and development of the plant, the leaf becomes dark green in color and many strong buds form early enough.
HERB-HELP TOTOMATOES
Tomatoes have a fairly powerful root system, located in the upper layers of the soil. From the hot rays of the sun, the earth dries up, and the tomatoes stop growing, leaves and buds begin to fall off. They especially need water during planting seedlings, during flowering and fruit formation. However, with prolonged waterlogging, the stem, leaves and buds suffer, so it is better to avoid damp places when planting.
Due to the high humidity of the air, pollination worsens, the buds fall off, the plant becomes ill with late blight, black leg, etc., so watering is needed rare, but plentiful.
So that the earth in the greenhouse does not dry out, I put hay or mowed fresh grass between the tomatoes: over the summer it decomposes and feeds the roots. And it makes my work easier - I need to water and feed less, and here there are high nutritional requirements. You will get a rich harvest if there is enough phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, calcium and other nutrients in the soil, which enhance the growth of roots, accelerate flowering, the formation and development of fruits.
I grow tomatoes on two beds in a greenhouse. It is located in a sunny place from west to east, and is protected from the north by buildings, so it warms up well during the day. Tomatoes ripen on the vine, which means a lot: they are ripe, sweet, tasty. I plant two rows of 15 pieces on each bed.
In the spring, when the earth warms up and frosts pass, I dig up the beds, make holes. I am preparing top dressing: I add a glass of ash and a liter jar of mullein to a 10-liter bucket of water. First, I put a seedling in the hole and pour 1 liter of top dressing around the roots. I immediately fall asleep with earth and make a mound around the stem. When I plant two rows, I pour abundantly from a watering can with clean water under the roots, I never water over the leaves. I land in the evening or afternoon in cloudy weather. In the morning it is especially pleasant to go into the greenhouse, admire the shoots and wish the green pets a good morning. Tomatoes stand straight, pleasing to the eye, and there has not yet been a case of at least one seedling dying or withering.
It will take about 10-15 days, and I will tie each stem to a rope that is stretched in two rows above the beds near the ceiling.
SEEDLING OF TOMATOES WITHOUT DAMP
Already in mid-February, I begin to deal with seedlings - I prepare the soil mixture in a large basin. I pour out a bag of peat soil from the store, add twice as much earth from the greenhouse and pour three or four handfuls of ash. I mix everything well and warm it up on the stove so that weed seeds, various pests and fungi die. When the earth cools down, I fall asleep in the baths and make grooves 1-2 cm deep at a distance of 3-4 cm from each other. I spread the seeds at a distance of 2-3 cm, cover with earth, water, cover with a transparent film and put in a warm place. Every day I lift the film to air the sprouts.
Seedlings grow very quickly when warm. As soon as this happened, you immediately need to remove the film and put the trays closer to the light.
If there are cloudy days, the seedlings will stretch out, so I carefully, with a spoon, pour the earth between the rows, and the weak sprouts are still stronger. This filling can be done several times.
When two or three true leaves appear, you can dive. I plant them in sour cream jars, choose stable ones, with a wide bottom and even walls - later it will be convenient to plant large seedlings in a greenhouse. When picking, I try to deepen the seedling to the very leaves. With my index finger in loose, not too damp earth, I make a hole almost to the very bottom, carefully pour 2 tbsp into it. l. warm water, lower the seedling to the leaves and fill the entire void around the stem with earth.
The main thing is not to add damp earth so that the seedling does not get sick with a black leg.
All jars are in my large plastic tub. You can adapt any strong cardboard box by cutting the edges to the height of the container, then it will be convenient to turn the container towards the light in one direction or another. I use my growing pots many times. After landing in the greenhouse, I soak all the jars in the bath and, when they get wet, wash, dry, put into each other and store until next year.
I wish you all good luck in the country and good mood!
