How to save strawberries not planted on time in winter - my experience
STRAWBERRY SEASONS - MY FEEDBACK AND ADVICE ON STORING SEEDLINGS
How many experimental results end up in the trash when it looks like everything has finally gone awry? Do not count! However, do not rush to conclusions and despair - some plants can be saved.
Hello, my beloved "wonderful gardeners" and friendly editorial team! I study each number with pleasure, but how long have I not communicated with you! How long did she not talk about her life. Many unhappy events happened in my life, but thanks to Dacha and your letters, I did not lose heart. Learning to live again, differently, alone ...
Winter in our region this year is real. Grapes, roses and other plants are securely covered with snow. And today I want to tell you about my favorite - strawberries. About how she survived with me and survived the winter in uncomfortable conditions for herself.
I have been growing strawberries from seeds for a long time. Both large-fruited ordinary, and remontant, and small-fruited beardless were successful.
For myself, I understood the most important thing: the seeds should be as fresh as possible.
Best of all, plants sprouted and developed from seeds purchased according to. Thank you all for not cheating! There was no sorting, all seeds are of excellent quality, and their quantity in bags is more than stated. But I digressed from the topic.
I have a small box on the site - a high bed (photo 1), where I used to plant purchased bushes of large-fruited strawberries for vegetative propagation, if I bought one or two pieces. Now I grow it from seeds, and plant the box with whatever I have to. Our places are beautiful, in the fields seasonally medicinal forbs: coltsfoot in the lowlands, mint in the meadows, St. John's wort and oregano on the hillocks. But most importantly, there are so many strawberries growing on the hills (here they call them meadow strawberries) that at the peak of their ripening, even the air is filled with the aroma of berries!
The meadow strawberry grows, as it should be, in clearings. So I wanted to start a similar one in my area. For a long time I was looking for seeds of mustachioed remontant strawberries on various sites ... Everywhere there is a huge assortment of beardless, of any colors and shades. But whoever seeks, he will always find: soon I became the happy owner of two bags of strawberry seeds of the remontant mustachioed variety Seasons, and I will say right away that he did not disappoint.
The berries are sweet, rich red in color, the bushes give a lot of whiskers that take root, and at the end of summer berries also ripen on them. This variety can be successfully grown in ampelous culture.
I sowed the seeds in early March in a ground beef bed filled with all-purpose soil. Seedlings appeared in a week, my strawberry grew together. She didn’t feed her anything - there is enough food in the purchased soil. I dived into a seedling tray with cells, two or three pieces each. The strawberry continued to grow, it was time to plant it in the ground, and I ... I could not.
And so she stood in a cramped container, losing leaves and diligently building up new ones. My strength, physical and mental, was only enough for watering.
Autumn came, followed by winter. The leaves on the strawberries dried up, and I cut them off (photo 2-3), and put the container with the roots in a bag and lowered it into a basement with a low plus temperature. Occasionally watered, but did not really hope for anything.
At the end of February, lo and behold! - I discovered the first green sprouts from hearts. She brought strawberries into the house, watered, fed. Shoots cheerfully went to growth, and when the earth warmed up, planted the bushes in a permanent place. By the end of summer, it was already a whole clearing with unusual fragrant berries (photo 4).
I want to appeal to all readers: you can save strawberries in winter! Do not rush to throw away dried bushes, they can be given a second life.
Good health and rich harvests to you!
