    Perennial ornamental crops, ranging from primroses and delphinium to lavender and barberry, cannot be grown without a cold period. Stratification of annuals also increases germination.
    The best all-purpose soil for stratification is washed coarse sand (although earth will do). Dry seeds are placed in it (they get wet from wet sand), mixed and stored at the bottom of a closed glass jar - in the refrigerator, for two to three months.
