HOW WE BUILT A WELL AT THE COTTAGE WITH OWN HANDS
WHAT COTTAGE WITHOUT A WELL
I bought a plot, planted a garden, planted a garden ... And then? And then the well-known truth that "without water, neither here nor there."
However, it is easy to say - make a well, but how? The master class is given by the reader.
"CRANE" IN HANDS OR RAIN FROM THE SKY?
About ten years ago we bought a plot in the Leningrad region and it turned out that you need to go to the neighbors for water, and not to the neighboring plot, but much further! And it’s not that the neighbors reproached us, but sometimes they proudly said: well, they say, we are the owners, we immediately took care of the water, but when will you get your own? In short, both uncomfortable and insulting.
Of course, we tried to use the neighbor's well less often and, as best we could, collected rainwater for irrigation and household needs. But it was sorely lacking, especially in dry years. Finally, we decided...
We went to the neighbors: are there any signs on this subject, where to dig it, a well? And how, in fact, to dig it?
A TRUE SIGN FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A WELL IN THE COTTAGE
Our distant relative volunteered to find a place for the well, using the old method. We just shrugged our shoulders when Pavel Andreevich, with his arms bent at the elbows, walked around the site, holding two aluminum letters "P" in slightly clenched fists by their crossbars. Moreover, the wire stuck out forward by as much as 20 cm, no less! Uncle Pasha himself, with a serious look, turned in the direction in which the wires turned. And all in all seriousness!
Finally, in one place, the frames began to cross, and Uncle Pasha declared that there was a well to be!
The place, however, turned out to be good: quite far from the dunghill and the latrine (20-25 meters, no less), on the lawn the coltsfoot turns yellow, mosquitoes and midges swarm, and other plants indicate the proximity of groundwater - reeds, horse sorrel, sedge, forget-me-nots, sow thistle.
But we checked the place in another old way: we took a piece of defatted, washed and dried wool and laid it on clean ground (without sod), and laid a freshly laid egg on top. Then all this was covered with a clay pot (you can use a frying pan) and covered with turf.
In the morning after sunrise, the wool and the egg under cover were covered with dew (this meant that the water was not deep, at a depth of about 3-7 m). A dry egg and wet wool would mean a greater distance to the water at a given location. The complete absence of moisture under the vessel would indicate that the water is very deep or it is not in this place.
Then they counted. Digging a well for one house is an expensive business. We agreed with the neighbors, whose plots border on ours, to build a wooden log well for three houses. Of course, it would be faster and easier to drill an artesian well, but knowledgeable people explained that in the event of a well failure, it is not easy to replace equipment. The pump burned out - and you can no longer get water by hand. So it's better the old fashioned way - from the well.

LOGO TO START
We hired a couple of economic men from our village, bought logs for a log house (they should not be too large, with a diameter of 10-18 cm). To save materials with a diameter of more than 20 cm, logs can be divided in half lengthwise. Moreover, in the manufacture of a log house, they are placed with planes inside. We used alder - this type of wood gives a minimal taste to the water, although oak, elm, and larch can be used - these are durable materials that will serve you for decades. To save money, the top of the log house was built from pine (it didn’t even have to be bought, it grows enough on the plots, it would still have to be uprooted, making room for the garden).
So, first, the men built a log house 1,3 × 1,3 m, about 6 m high (it is difficult to accurately predict its height in advance), marked the crowns and dismantled it. Moreover, the logs before construction were carefully processed, sanded, and the ends were chopped off “in the paw”, without protrusions.
Then the most exciting moment came: the whole company carefully leveled the site chosen for the well, making sure that there was no distortion, and the men reassembled the first crowns of the log house.

PURE WATER
Then they began to pick up soil with shovels, first from the middle of the log house and under the log house itself. At the same time, he gradually sank. As the precipitation progressed, the log house was built up. The selected soil was fed from the recess upward with a bucket using a block.
The space between the log house and the walls of the pit was filled up gradually and not compacted so as not to interfere with the subsidence of the log house. We had to dig a well to a depth of 5 m, until the guaranteed water began to arrive. For reliability, they went deeper into the aquifer by another 2 m.
At the bottom of the well, so that the water does not become muddy, we poured a layer of coarse-grained sand (about 15 cm), and gravel (crushed stone can be) on it with a layer of 20 cm. The upper part of the log house was folded above ground level by about 80 cm.
Finally, the final stage came: pillars were placed near the finished well, on which they strengthened the gate with a chain and a bucket for water and a small, “hut”, roof. The top of the log house was sheathed with a board, and a horizontal flooring with a width of at least 25 cm was arranged along the crown, so that it was convenient to put buckets. A “castle” was made around the well – soft clay was compacted to a height of 30 cm and within a radius of 1 m, and stones were already laid on the clay.
Knowledgeable people suggested to us that a shallow drainage ditch should also be dug along the perimeter of the well, which we did.
The well still (five years have passed) regularly gives normal water! So believe in yourself, dear friends
LIKBEZ BY THE WELL IN THE COTTAGE:
- The most reliable way to determine the location of water is exploratory drilling. There are shaft wells, tubular or boreholes.
- Wells can be wooden, concrete, stone.
- The water in the well can be artesian, ground, permafrost, etc.
- The main working tools used in the construction of the well are shovel and bayonet shovels, crowbar (for digging in dense soils), an ax, a two-handed saw, and a bucket, cable or chain are also needed.
