Growing potatoes in a damp place on high ridges (Udmurtia)

HIGH BEDS WITHOUT BOARDS FOR POTATO PLANTING
I live in the private sector, all the plots there got in a damp place. And although 20 KamAZ trucks of sand were delivered, over time everything settled and disappeared somewhere. Who could raise their plots as best they could. For example, we buried both sawdust and various rotten wood, waste after sawing firewood, wood chips, and various plant residues. Then they buried the bark of coniferous trees, and it turned out to be the best option. The bark rots very slowly and lasts for a long time.
While I was working, there was not enough time for everything, especially since I was widowed early. I had to work and earn extra money, because there were three daughters at the age of eleven, seven and three years old. And there were times - dashing 90s, hard ... But let's not talk about sad things. Now my girls are already adults, each has her own family, and I have seven grandchildren, whom I love very much.
Potatoes have always been grown the old fashioned way: dug and planted under a shovel. There were stormy years when heavy rains poured all summer, and sometimes she ended up in the water. Harvests, of course, were lost. Someone planted in the combs, but this did not save. And when I retired and had more time, I wanted to put things in order in the garden. I love the garden: my soul sings and rejoices when I work on it. All the sores disappear somewhere, you start working and forget about them.
My favorite crops are potatoes and tomatoes. Of course, something else grows, like everyone else in the garden. So I began to think, how can I get the potatoes to grow normally. I had to act "at random".
Began to prepare the ridges. First, in half of the plot allotted for potatoes, I made several ridges of four rows and three rows in the garden. The rest was planted, as usual, by the traditional method.
I liked it: you don’t trample anything, but it turned out to be not very convenient to hill up.
The next year, I began to make beds in two rows. The width of the ridges is 95 cm, and the passage is 40 cm. And how I liked it! I spud not along the beds, but across. I rarely plant: 50 cm between rows, and 60 cm between each other. There is enough land for hilling, since I hill across and do not have to rake from the aisles. You walk along the aisle - you spud one row in one direction, then you turn around and spud on the other side. It turns out quickly and easily.
I don’t change the beds with paths, they are permanent for me. Even in spring I can walk along the border without risking getting stuck in the ground. I did not make the ridges along the rope, but simply trampled the paths, and they turned out to be slightly different in width. Where wider, I plant in two rows, where narrower - in a checkerboard pattern.
And on three sides, where potatoes grow, I dug grooves between the fence and plantings and, so that the earth does not crumble, I overlaid it with boards and put spacers so that in the spring they would not fall (on one of the photos you can see).

WOMEN'S DAY FOR LANDINGS
My entire garden is divided into ridges with wide aisles, this is also visible in the photo. And in one of the pictures you can see a stuck pin with a beer can. There used to be a lot of them, now I left three pieces - this is how I escape from the bear and moles. Now I don’t watch them anymore, so I left a little just in case. In one of the photos in the background is a summer house, where you can relax in the cool in summer.
I do not process tubers before planting. In the spring I take it out of the underground and sort it out, cut off too long sprouts: by the time of planting, new strong sprouts will appear. When it gets warm, I take it out under a canopy. I never look at the Lunar calendar, I just plant it on women's days (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday). And this applies to any landings.
When planting, I add ash and urea (1 tsp) to the hole, mix everything with my hand and lay out the tubers with the sprouts up. I work only with a flat cutter - I walked along the garden bed, made holes, laid out, mixed, laid out potatoes and covered the holes with earth. Everything is very fast and convenient.
I loosen the ridges, I don’t dig. In general, I work with a flat cutter in the entire garden - I spud, cut the weeds in the beds and paths and leave them there. After planting the harrow in about five days, the top layer is loosened, and the rudiments of awakening weeds die.
When the potatoes rise, I pile them up, and when the tops reach 20-25 cm, I pile them up and don’t touch them anymore. I don't water at all. Even when it's hot. I pass 2-4 times per season with a sprayer, where I have a solution of water with gumi (I breed according to the table). And one more thing: if the bushes are weak and pale, I prepare a pink solution of potassium permanganate and pour half a liter into the middle of each bush. After such an operation, the bushes become strong, the leaves acquire a rich color.
I start harvesting as soon as the tops begin to turn yellow and dry, and immediately I select tubers for planting from productive bushes. Not mine, except during very rainy seasons when the potatoes are dirty and you can't see anything. Then yes - I wash, dry, sort out.
I lay out the planting after drying in fruit boxes. I leave it in the sun so that it turns green: this way it is stored better. Potatoes that are used for food are also dried and put into mesh bags. It is very convenient: it is blown from all sides, and if rot appears, it is only dry.

FLOWERS AND MUSTARD
And last year I planted two beds: one with the addition of onions, the other with soaked orange peels. One reader planted with citrus zest - I read it in Dacha and also decided to try it, since there were a lot of dry peels.
By the way, orange peels are great for a strong lingering cough. It is necessary to brew fresh crusts, let them brew a little and drink a little during the day. Checked multiple times.
But I digress. I planted the same variety for comparison. Everything came up very quickly, but the tops somehow did not please the eye - thin and pale. Even after the strait of potassium permanganate, it has not changed much. As a result, good potatoes grew everywhere, except for these two beds. On these rose average. This method did not impress me, but I will not say that it is bad. Perhaps it really works for someone, because, as they say, you won’t know until you try.
I don’t process anything from beetles, I collect them with my hands - there are not so many of them. Maybe it's because of the flowers? Mattiola (night violet) exudes a fabulous fragrance, especially in the evening. They say that fragrant tobacco, which also has a wonderful smell, also helps. I planted it, but in flower beds.
I always plant several varieties of potatoes, including Rosara, Bella-rosa, and, unfortunately, I don’t know the rest. In the spring, when the potatoes are already running out, we buy them in the store, and I gradually leave the one that I like for planting. So last year in June I bought fresh potatoes, probably early - I left 8 tubers for planting. Let's see what happens.
After digging potatoes, I sow mustard, it has time to grow well. I don’t close it up in the fall - so it leaves with a green carpet before winter. In the spring, I loosen the ground right with it and plant it, and it sticks out in different directions. But a month passes, and nothing remains: the worms know their business.
There used to be a lot of wireworm, but as soon as the mustard began to sow, it was gone. She also planted mustard between the ridges - supposedly it takes away excess moisture when it rains heavily. I didn’t notice a big difference, but I continue to sow mustard after hilling the potatoes. It grows quickly and even blooms, and then I pull it out and put it between the ridges. And when we dig potatoes, we bury them and sow mustard again.
Something like that. With big regards and a lot of best wishes to you!
