GROWING POTATOES IN MORDOVSKIAN
If plants in your area often suffer from summer heat and drought, you need a special approach to choosing potato varieties and thoughtful planting techniques. We hope that our experience will be useful to many, because the climate is getting warmer almost everywhere.
DON'T BE AFRAID OF NEWS
In Mordovia, summer heat and drought do not allow a good potato harvest at normal planting dates, but early ripening varieties and early planting of specially prepared tubers help out. In this case, the plants use the spring moisture and have time to form large tubers until the middle of summer, by the onset of heat and drought.
One problem is that gardeners often plant old varieties out of habit, being afraid of new products or being too lazy to acquire and test them. In Mordovia, the early Sorokadnevka variety is popular, but what is hidden under this name is unknown, most likely, this is the Early Rose variety, which is long outdated, severely affected by diseases, and will sing longer. Zhukovsky early is also common, in my opinion, inferior to new varieties in taste.
But it is not difficult to choose the right variety - early ripening, productive, with excellent taste, resistant to diseases - today. I experienced many of these and singled out Vega and Fidelia. I liked the variety from Yekaterinburg Terra, which even in the hot summer pleased with large tasty tubers. Also noteworthy are the varieties Anita, Mirage, Gulliver, Gioconda,
Ranomi, Reggae, Julia, Sharpe, Express, Lady Claire, Comet.
When choosing a variety, specify for which regions it is recommended, or conduct a variety test yourself by planting different varieties. According to its results, in 2-3 years you will select the best ones for your farm.

SELECTING HEAT-RESISTANT POTATO VARIETY - TRUST PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
So the variety has been chosen. Now we need to grow it!
I take out the seed tubers from storage at the end of March, put them in boxes in one layer and put them in a room with diffused light and a temperature of 5-10 °. In such conditions, the tubers are almost a month, and by the time of planting, strong powerful sprouts and a lush root lobe are formed on them. There are other ways to prepare tubers for planting, but mine is probably the simplest - they lie in their boxes, warm themselves and germinate.
From time to time it is necessary to inspect the tubers, remove rotting ones and those with long thin shoots, they may turn out to be viral.
I plant only seed tubers weighing at least 80 g, capable of providing sprouts with nutrition, so that powerful tops form as quickly as possible.
The timing of planting depends on the weather, usually it is the end of April - the beginning of May, when the soil at the depth of planting tubers warms up to 10 °. Our gardeners are guided by such a sign: birch leaves have blossomed, which means that the earth has warmed up and you can plant potatoes.
In cold soil, tubers can lie for a long time, not grow and not sprout, but my tubers have an advantage - they already have roots, and it’s not scary if the soil is a little colder. When it is possible to cover the plantings with a film or non-cloth, you can plant earlier, dig, respectively, too.

The planting pattern is ordinary - 70 × 30 cm. I make the holes not too deep - about 20 cm, this is important if the soil has not yet warmed up enough, then it is better to spud 2-3 times. As the tops grow, I sometimes spud up to 5 times.
Potatoes love loose, fertile, organic, fairly moist soil. When planting, I apply a complex mineral fertilizer -1 teaspoon of nitrophoska per hole. Good food means a rich harvest.
Watering is usually not required, there is enough spring moisture and rainfall, but I water if necessary.
The first trial digging of early potatoes is in mid-June, many varieties by this time please with a good harvest of large delicacy tubers. Such potatoes are not superfluous to the table, many gardeners successfully sell the harvest. Young potatoes from household plots are always in demand in local markets.

I don’t cut large potato tubers before planting, I just plant them 4-5 cm deeper than ordinary and small ones.
I leave at least 90 cm between the rows, and I place the potatoes themselves 30 cm apart.
The first time I spud as soon as shoots appear, the second - before budding, the third - if I notice that the bush has fallen apart.
From Colorado beetles, I treat plants with Mospilan (0 g per 5 liters of water per hundred square meters) or Aktara (10 g per 1 liters of water per hundred square meters).

I plant potatoes according to a sign
Grandmother taught that potatoes should be planted as soon as leaves the size of a penny appear on the birch. When planting in the holes, pour a handful of oven ash. Every 9-10 bushes we plant a black bean bush to the potato. And we plant the entire area around the perimeter with beans and dill.
For all the time we spud potatoes 3 times. The tops grow lush, Colorado beetles are an order of magnitude smaller.
As a result, when we start digging the crop, everyone looks at our site with envy. We collect twice as many bags as our neighbors!
