Haircut 1-3 year old currants and gooseberries IN AUTUMN - gardeners advise

CUTTING SHRUBS IN AUTUMN
As soon as the fall leaves the fall, it is necessary to prune and form berry crops, especially currants, gooseberries and raspberries, as well as ornamental shrubs.
Readers argue about how to “cut the bushes” correctly.
CUTTING A ONE-YEAR AND THREE-YEAR CURRANT BUSH
The leaves fell off, and every branch became visible: this one dried up, and that one was covered with some suspicious orange dots
Currants and gooseberries, having overwintered, wake up so early and release leaves that there is practically no time left for pruning them. Moreover, in the spring there is a lot of other work in the garden, urgent and urgent. We didn’t have time to look back, but time has already been lost, and we have to postpone pruning again. Therefore, I spend pruning shrubs only in the fall.
Almost everyone grows currants in their plots, but not everyone knows the rules for caring for it.
So, if you decide to plant an annual currant seedling of any variety, you need to cut off the aerial part of the shrub when planting.
For a 3-year-old seedling, there are different rules: only one-year growth is shortened for it. But this only applies to blackcurrant. In white and red three-year-old currants, I do not shorten the ends of the increments.
Inexperienced gardeners often feel sorry for seedlings and do not prune. As a result, the branches thicken the crown, diverge at angles sharper than 45, split and injure the tree.
In general, at the blackcurrant bush, I annually leave 3-4 branches of the so-called “zero order”, i.e. those that form from the base of the bush.
By the age of five, the bush should already have 2-3 branches of different ages.
6-year-old branches no longer grow so fast, they are often drooping, so I cut them at the base of the bush at soil level.
In young bushes of red and white currants, I leave annually 1-2 strong shoots formed from the base of the bush. I cut everything else. And on an adult bush, I completely remove 7-8-year-old branches, if they suddenly became capricious and began to bear little fruit, there is no growth of zero shoots on them, or at the ends of the branches, the current growth decreases to 5-10 cm.
In general, on any shrubs, first of all, I cut out drying and broken branches, shoots damaged by stem gall midge or powdery mildew.
I see that many neglect the annual pruning of shrubs. In vain! My people thank me for an excellent harvest: the thinned bushes are well ventilated, and each leaf literally bathes in the sun! In addition, annually cut bushes get sick much less often than their shaggy counterparts, the berry grows larger, and the yield increases.

CUTTING 1-2-YEAR-OLD GOSEBERRY SEEDLINGS
When planting 1 - 2-year-old gooseberry seedlings, I do their pruning in the same way as for currants, carefully cutting off the aerial part. But with age, too many young shoots appear in the gooseberry bush - those that are formed annually at the base of the bush. Therefore, every year I am not too lazy to remove all these shoots that are unnecessary for the bush, only taking away its strength. I leave no more than 3-4, the strongest, located in different parts of the bush. And I never leave leaning branches.
However, the most correct, in my opinion, is to grow gooseberries with a limited number of perennial branches. This method is especially good for winter-hardy and late varieties.
I do pruning like this: after planting and one year of growth
I cut off a seedling almost at the very ground, and in the summer I let no more than three shoots grow. In the future, I remove all the young shoots that form from the base of the bush. And after 4-5 years, I begin a slight rejuvenation of old branches. This is how, over the years, I have formed a bush with a small number of branches, convenient for picking berries.
