Sanitary and shaping pruning in spring - my advice
TWO TYPES OF CUTTING GARDEN TREES IN SPRING - MY SECRETS AND TIPS
When nature wakes up and a new season begins, summer residents should worry not only about seedlings, but also about trees growing on the site. Some of them need our attention and care from the very beginning of spring.
Spring has come - it's time to pick up a pruner and start the first work in the garden: pruning, cuttings and grafting. However, do not rush to cut everything in a row! Many cultures do not need this procedure in the spring, as their flower buds are laid before winter.
Weak flowering or complete absence of buds is the only result of pruning. It's unpleasant, isn't it? I will list some plants that fall under this category: honeysuckle, barberry, gooseberry, currant (especially red), chokeberry, almond, spirea, forsythia, garden jasmine (mock orange), Japanese peony.
I start two types of pruning still dormant apple and pear trees in early spring, as soon as the snow melts. Sanitization includes anti-aging pruning and removal of frozen, broken and diseased shoots. The formative one requires more work: I lighten the crown of the tree, leave the shoots growing in the right direction, remove the fattening ones, shorten last year's young by 2/3 of the length. To do this, I find a kidney looking away from the crown, and cut over it. Stone fruits - plums, cherries, sweet cherries - I cut them off a little later.
After the procedure, I always cover the sections with garden pitch or resin.
Do not forget that pruning any tree requires an individual approach. This year I decided to cut the thuja. Seven years ago, such an experience was a success - and such a beauty grew up (photo 1)! I recommend propagating thuja in the spring: then it will take root better.
The parent branch must be older than three years and at least 5 mm thick. From the top of the tree I break off small branches 10-15 cm long with a “heel”: this is the name of the part of the bark of the central trunk.
Preventing decay, I remove the lower leaves and leave a "heel" 4-5 cm long. I place the branches for two to three hours in a container with a solution of potassium permanganate for disinfection, then I dust the entire lower part with a root formation stimulator and plant it at an angle of 45 ° in separate cups with a volume of at least 0,5 l (photo 2-3).
For rooting, I take purchased land, turf: and vermiculite in a ratio of 1: 1: 173.

The substrate must be loose and breathable.
I always put the cups with twigs in a cool place with a temperature of 12-15°. After about three to four weeks, roots appear, then the plants can be transplanted either into a school or to a permanent place. Care is simple: regular watering and application of mineral fertilizers suitable for coniferous trees.
I started to get involved in vaccinations recently, so I'm just mastering this technology so far. A pear grows in my garden, which, after a second transplant, has already turned eight years old. We bought a seedling of the Lada variety, but, apparently, we stumbled upon unscrupulous sellers. There are many fruits, they are juicy, large and ... sour. It is impossible to eat them fresh - they are suitable only for jam and compotes.
Two years ago, she grafted the cultivar Chizhovskaya on it into a split. The operation was a success: fruit buds grew on the branch, so I look forward to the harvest! Under a layer of snow, pear cuttings August dew were patiently waiting for their turn (photo 4). I took them up on warm days and I hope that everything will take root.
Grafting helps to rejuvenate an old tree, improve its yield and get different varieties on the same trunk. Do not believe that only breeders do this, try: you will definitely succeed!
