I grow tomatoes only in open ground. In May, at night I cover the plants with a film on the middle arcs.
Two weeks after planting the seedlings in the ground, I spud the bushes almost to the lower leaves and immediately mulch the beds with chopped straw with a layer about 15 cm thick. As I settle, I add mulch. This protects the soil from drying out and overheating, and weeds grow much more slowly.
