Planting cherries on clay - how to improve the soil?
CLAY IS NOT A HINDER TO CHERRY
I decided to plant shrub cherries in front of the window. I started digging holes and realized that a place with dense clay and a minimum of organic matter is not suitable. The trees here will only wither away. Cherries love light black earth-sandy soil, neutral or slightly alkaline, not prone to stagnant water. I did not want to change the landing site, so I had to solve the problem.
I decided to dig a "pit" for each seedling and fill it with suitable soil. For simplicity, I dug pits in the form of a square with a side of 1 m - I made a marking on the ground with a level (photo 1), removed the upper more or less fertile layer and removed the clay (photo 2)
I decided to fill the “pits” with mixed black soil from the top layer of the pit, sand and well-rotted cow dung in equal parts.
Additionally, the chemicals recommended for cherries were added to the soil mixture - 3 matchboxes of potassium sulfate, 5 - superphosphate, two liter cans of wood ash (you can use 1 tbsp. Dolomite flour) and 1 tbsp. crushed to the state of flour eggshell. He acted like this.
First I mixed the chemicals: I measured superphosphate and potassium sulfate into a small plastic bucket. Added gold. I crushed the eggshell separately (photo 3) and poured it into the mixture in small portions, completely mixing everything properly (photo 4). It is convenient to mix the components of the soil mixture right in the pit in layers. In each, I filled up one garden cart of the upper earth with turf, sand, and manure.
Each layer was evenly distributed with a rake. Sprinkled on top with a part of the mixed chemicals - 800 g per serving (soil-manure-sand). The layers turned out to be about the thickness of a spade bayonet. I mixed them, then put soil, manure and sand on the mixture again (mixed again). Thus completely filled all the holes.
Replanted trees. I tried to orient the seedlings in a new place to the cardinal points in the same way as they grew before transplanting. If necessary, shaped branches with pegs and soft ropes.
CONSULTATION OF THE SPECIALIST
The author performed the transplantation of cherry seedlings correctly. But there is one point here - it is important in this case not to overdo it with fertilizers. It is necessary that the roots do not come into contact with the fertilizers themselves, as the latter can burn them.
Fertilizers must be thoroughly mixed with the soil when planting. You don’t need a lot of them for such a pit - a teaspoon of potassium sulfate, superphosphate and urea, or a tablespoon of nitroammophoska containing all three components. But from the shell of eggs in this case there will be no use, but also harm.
It is also important to arrange plantings strictly from north to south, so that as the crown develops, they do not begin to obscure each other. From residential buildings, if they are oriented to the south, you also need to retreat, based on their height. Usually retreat to the height of the building plus a meter. Do not forget about the support pegs, at this stage they are needed so that the planted seedling does not bend from the wind or changes in the soil.
