PEAR "RED": LOOKING FOR THE REASON
The leaves of the pear variety Chizhovskaya began to turn red. What is this disease? Help save the tree.
Zoya Butyrchik
Red leaves in summer are a signal that something is wrong with your tree. And the reasons can be very different. Here are the most likely.
1. Phosphorus deficiency
In this case, the leaf turns red from the underside (from the petiole and gradually reaches the tips). The upper plate is green at first, and then it turns red.
What to do? Once every 2-3 weeks (from April to mid-July), feed the plant with ammophos: evenly distribute the fertilizer over the crown projection area, embedding it under loosening to a depth of 10-20 cm, then be sure to water it.
2. Waterlogging of the earth around the pear
With stagnant water, the soil blocks air from reaching the roots, which begin to suffocate. The reason may be an initially unsuccessful place for planting a seedling - a lowland, an area with a close occurrence of groundwater.
What to do? If a young pear grows in a lowland, then in late autumn it is better to transplant it to a new place.
If the humidity near the tree is not critical, the water does not stagnate for a long time, then to remove moisture (for example, after a rainstorm), you need to dig drainage grooves around the plant.
3. Incompatibility of rootstock and scion
More often this applies to seedlings on low-growing clonal rootstocks. Incompatibility can appear at any age (even a few years after planting). The first call is the formation of swims on the cortex below at the place of budding. As a result, metabolism is disturbed, and the leaves may turn red. What to do? Incompatibility usually ends in breaks. In this case, you can graft the rootstock with a different variety. And advice for the future: buy seedlings in reliable nurseries, where they know which rootstocks are suitable for which varieties.
4. Damage to aphids
The pest sucks all the juices from the leaves, which often turn red as a result.
What to do? After flowering, treat the crown with an insecticide (Aktara, Konfidor, BI-58). If necessary, spraying can be repeated after 10 days.
5. Too much lime in the pear planting hole
A large amount of lime leads to a lack of iron, which is required for the normal production of chlorophyll.
What to do? The introduction of organic matter will help: dig a groove 20 cm deep and wide along the diameter of the crown, fill it with compost or humus, pour it over and cover it with earth.
IS THE PEAR RED?
I have a Chizhovskaya pear growing. Last year in June the leaves began to turn red. When the harvest was harvested, I fed the tree with a solution of chicken manure, adding superphosphate and boric acid. I tried spraying with fungicide, but still nothing helped. The leaves remained red. What could this be and what should I do?

The reasons for reddening of leaves can be different. For example, if reddish spots appear on the leaves, then this is most likely some kind of pest or disease. If the leaves turn red completely or only the veins remain green, then the reason is usually incorrect agricultural technology or a lack of some elements.
Lack of phosphorus is one of the reasons why foliage may turn red. In this case, redness begins from the underside of the petiole and gradually stains the entire surface of the leaf. In this case, the upper side of the leaf blade initially remains green and only at the end also turns red. If this is the reason, phosphorus feeding is necessary. Phosphorus fertilizers do not dissolve well, so apply granules and water regularly so that the fertilizer gradually releases nutrients to the roots. It is best to feed with ammophos - it contains phosphorus, but it dissolves well in water. This feeding can also be done on the leaves. But we don’t recommend using ammophos in the second half of summer, since the nitrogen it also contains causes secondary growth.
Redness of the leaves can occur from -. for severe waterlogging, when the root system becomes wet and does not breathe well. Check to see if your pear tree is located in a low area, if there is stagnant water there after rains, or maybe there is groundwater close to it. Here the option is to replant the pear or plant a new seedling in a different place. If groundwater is close to the site, then you can plant on a mound.
Another reason for reddening of pear leaves is excess lime in the soil. When liming, measure doses carefully and do not overdo it. If this has already happened, then feed it with organic matter. Having dug a groove around the perimeter of the crown, add compost or humus into it, then fill it with soil. Carry out this type of feeding in the first half of summer.
