JAVAN RADISH - LANDING AND CARE
I recently learned that there is a type of radish that produces fruits in the form of pods. It's called Javanese. They say that this exotic is unpretentious and tasty. Supposedly even its flowers and leaves are edible. I am curious, but cautious, so I ask: is it worth sowing such a plant?
A. Tuchkov Moscow Region
This "novelty" was grown in our country in the XNUMXth - early XNUMXth centuries, then they forgot and remembered only now. Java radish is useful: it suppresses putrefactive intestinal microflora, contains silicon, which gives strength to blood vessels, promotes joint mobility.
The plant is unpretentious - shade-tolerant and is not afraid of our spring cold. It is high, when sown in early May according to the scheme of 30 × 30 cm, it grows up to 1,2-2 m in our country and gives many side branches. One bush meter diameter.
The first crop is ready for harvest in 45-55 days and bears fruit non-stop from early July to late autumn, forming many pods 4-10 cm long.
Javan radishes have varieties with both long and short pods, either green or purple (the latter being spicier).
However, the curiosity also has its downsides. Firstly, it looks unaesthetic on the site. Bushes grow powerful - under the weight of leaves and fruits, they fall sideways. They have to be tied to stakes.
Secondly, the Javan radish is quite aggressive.
In this respect, it is quite comparable to horseradish or mint. In a word, it is possible to control, but it is difficult.
Thirdly, it is not so tasty - it is harsh, sharp, harsh if it outgrows. Although it’s not bad for pickling and salting, but will you also process Javanese when we have it in our gardens and: so there is something to preserve Unless out of curiosity.
Fourth, there is a paradoxical danger. Gardeners report that this radish helps save cabbage from pests. Since it develops faster, all fleas, aphids and other parasites prefer to eat its grown bushes.
And later, the cabbage leaves "mother" and become too tough for many insects. But this plus smoothly turns into a minus.
Pests multiply violently on this radish: as soon as there is an excess of food, the number of “population” immediately grows there, including due to migration. And such a bait comes out more expensive.
