SELECTION OF VARIETIES FOR FRUITING CUCUMBERS ALL SEASON - CONVEYOR
It is generally accepted that cucumber is a very capricious culture. But if you approach agricultural technology correctly, choose suitable varieties and hybrids, and surround plants with care and attention, you can get a good harvest and even set up a conveyor for growing your favorite vegetables. Freshly picked, straight from the garden, a cucumber almost all year round is not a fantasy at all.
THREE WAVES OF CUCUMBER BEARING
I grow cucumbers in several stages. The first time I sow cucumber seeds in early spring. Cucumber is a thermophilic plant and will grow well only in warm and moist soil. Seeds sown in cold soil will not only not germinate, but will die. To protect the plants from recurrent frosts and other adverse climatic factors, I built a small greenhouse.
The first cucumbers are always responsible. Therefore, I choose reliable and proven varieties and hybrids.
Pickling - mid-season variety (58-60 days). The plant is medium-sized. The fruits are elongated cylindrical, 10-12 cm long, weighing 100-125 g, with large tubercles and light stripes. Zelentsy are suitable for fresh consumption, as well as for pickling and canning.
Zozulya F1 is an early ripe hybrid (42-48 days). The fruits are cylindrical, 14-24 cm long, weighing 160-300 g, slightly furrowed with rare large tubercles and pronounced longitudinal stripes. The pulp is dense, juicy, sweetish, with excellent taste, without bitterness. Zelentsy have a good presentation, do not turn yellow for a long time.
Pickling super F1
The second time I sow cucumbers in mid-June. For this period, I use only early hybrids that are resistant to powdery mildew.
Salting super F1 is an early hybrid with a female type of flowering and a consistently high yield. The fruits are even, 8-10 cm long, green, do not outgrow, without bitterness.
Parisian gherkin is an early ripe variety (40-45 days). The plant is medium-sized. The fruits are mini-gherkins, 5-10 cm long, weighing 60-80 g, large-tuberous, with a thin and delicate skin, without bitterness. When canned and salted, greens do not change color.
The third stage of sowing cucumbers falls on the end of July - the beginning of August. In warm weather, cucumbers grow together. For late sowing, I choose shade-tolerant hybrids of cucumbers that do not require pollination by bees, they are more hardened and productive. I advise you to refuse from semi-self-pollinated hybrids, since the activity of bees in September - October is almost zero.

The Chinese cold-resistant F1 proved to be excellent - a mid-early hybrid (50-55 days). The fruits are very long, 30-50 cm, dark green, with large tubercles and white spikes, weighing up to 150 g. The pulp is juicy and aromatic. The hybrid is characterized by increased endurance to adverse weather conditions, high productivity and excellent fruit quality.
I pre-soak the seeds in aloe juice or in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. For safety net, in order to know for sure that the seeds have germinated well, I sow them in cups, and then I transplant the seedlings into the soil. Care for late cucumbers consists in regular fertilizing with mineral and organic fertilizers, moderate watering and pinching. I feed the plants with fertilizers containing magnesium, potassium and nitrogen. I must form the stems of plants on the trellis in such a way that they do not overgrow, since the cucumber loves light and reacts negatively to thickening. I always remove shoots and leaves below the fourth leaf.
Harvest in September. is a special joy, the opportunity to enjoy many more times a vitamin salad made from fresh cucumbers and tomatoes with the addition of herbs. Therefore, I do not preserve autumn cucumbers. From 40 plants it is possible to collect about 20 kg of fruits. In taste, autumn cucumbers are almost the same as summer cucumbers, except that they are slightly less sweet.

WINTER OPTION FOR GROWING CUCUMBERS
Since November, cucumbers require additional lighting and heating, which makes the production of out-of-season products more costly. Therefore, I use December and January to prepare the greenhouse for the new season - I renew the soil, add mineral fertilizers or wood ash. Cucumbers prefer fertile and loose soil. You can purchase ready-made soil or prepare the soil mixture yourself. To do this, I mix 2/3 buckets of garden soil, 1 cup of chalk, 2 cups of ash, 4 cups of humus or biohumus and 1 cup of sand or vermiculite. One plant requires 5 liters of this mixture.
I start growing seedlings of cucumbers in January on the windowsills. I sow the seeds in small containers. After the appearance of the third leaf, the seedlings dive into a larger container. I make holes at the bottom so that excess moisture does not stagnate, but flows into the pan. So that the seedlings do not stretch and lie down, they need good lighting. The most economical option for additional illumination of seedlings is LED lamps. When the plants are small, I illuminate them 12 hours a day, and as they grow, I increase the illumination time to 14 hours a day.
After 3-4 weeks, when the plants grow by 15-20 cm, I transplant them into a polycarbonate greenhouse. Before flowering, I water the plants every 4-5 days, and in the phase of flowering and fruit set - once every two days. I maintain the temperature in the greenhouse at 22 ° C during the day and 18 ° C at night. It is also necessary to ensure that the air humidity in the greenhouse is 70-90%. Periodic spraying from a spray bottle is enough for a cucumber, but special humidifiers can also be used. Even on cloudy days, I regularly ventilate the greenhouse, as high humidity leads to the development of fungal diseases. You can make vents and open them from time to time. True, in winter frosts this method is not suitable - a lot of heat is lost. In this situation, a conventional fan helps me. It is enough to turn it on twice a day for 10-15 minutes.
Highly productive varieties and hybrids of cucumber, knowledge of the biological characteristics of this crop and due attention - this is the guarantee that you will always be provided with fresh crispy and beautiful greens.
