GROWING STRAWBERRY IN BAG, FIGHTING THE MAYBEETLE AND A FEW MORE TIPS ON CARE
We all strive to achieve something. But it's a shame if an annoying trifle blocks the path to a dream. For example, the larvae of the May beetle. Are you able to deal with this scourge? Excellent! But still, read this letter: suddenly you will discover something new for yourself.
STRAWBERRY SURVIVAL
I dreamed of growing strawberries since early childhood. It grew with us, but for some reason there were very few berries, and they did not have time to ripen, because I ate them green. I often imagined my garden half planted with strawberries. But young years, study, work, children, problems - in general, somehow it was not before.
But time passed, the children grew up, found their families, and I finally decided that it was time to fulfill my dream.
The dream came true, and for twenty years now I have been overjoyed at this wonderful noble berry! We all love to eat it. Having planted the first ten bushes, I began to intensively study all the literature on the technology of growing this crop. I made mistakes: either I water it excessively, or I overdo it with chicken droppings (I have chickens and rabbits), or I don’t remove my mustache, which I am sorry to pluck: they are so beautiful, plump - just a feast for the eyes! But how do the larvae of the Maybug pester me
In the spring, as expected, I cut off old and dried leaves, feed them. I prefer to use only safe top dressings: infusions of chicken or rabbit droppings, herbal (nettle, dandelion and chamomile infusions are very good), ash (we have a bathhouse). In the aisle in the spring I sow mustard, then I cut it off with a flat cutter and leave it there. Strawberries are luxurious, all in bloom, you can stare. And suddenly I look - several bushes have drooped.
I dig out, and there are the larvae of the May beetle. And it must be so - just at the moment when it is time for her to ripen!
I destroy these parasites, plant the same bushes again, water them. But to no avail: there is no harvest, the strawberries are gloomy, barely surviving, and if the berries ripen, then they are somehow dry and not very sweet.
I rummaged through the entire Internet in the hope of finding a remedy for these enemies of my strawberries, but I don’t like everything: either pesticides, or “folk remedies”, which are of no use. I tried to shed ammonia in the grooves - there is no result. I decided to try a special purchased product, sprinkled it into the hole, everything was according to the instructions. I look, they seem to be alive, I calmed down a little. A week later, the bush drooped. I dig out - the roots were eaten by the Khrushchev and lie inanimate. And so the whole plantation.
Can anyone suggest what else to try? Pour further this remedy? But after all, malicious larvae are able to travel long distances in order to find food for themselves, some will die - others will crawl. Here's my trouble.
EXPERIMENT WITH STRAWBERRY
Somewhere I heard that you can plant strawberries in bags to save them from the larvae of the cockchafer. Last year I decided to give it a try. I sewed three dozen spunbond bags with a diameter of 25 cm with a stapler and filled them with soil. I made holes in the garden, dug these bags in there and planted plants. Everyone seemed to be alive last year.
Why did I decide to do this? I thought so. the spunbond is strong, the worm will not gnaw at synthetics in order to drill to the roots. And if the female of the May beetle lays her eggs in this bag, then the larvae for the winter will not be able to go to the depths and will freeze.
Of course, it will not be very convenient to loosen the ground near the root without hitting the bag, but I will endure such inconvenience, if only to save my berry. As a result, for the past three years I have been growing strawberries in bags and I am satisfied. What will happen next? Wait and see. Maybe one of the strawberry lovers knows another effective way to deal with the larvae of the cockchafer and will share their experience.

THE MOST FAVORITE STRAWBERRY
It is very important to choose a variety that suits me. It took me a long time to choose the right one for myself. I did not pass by the store and the rows of the market where you could buy strawberry seedlings. Of course, I bought two or three bushes - it's like buying a pig in a poke. Friends and neighbors gave their varieties - both old and new. I tried 20 varieties in 19 years and settled on the Ruby pendant. Why does he attract me?
The berry is very sweet, almost no sourness, unusually tasty, fragrant.
The berry is transportable. My friend from Moscow, leaving, took a bucket of strawberries, brought them safely and savored them at home for a whole week.
The berry is perfect for freezing: it does not lose its taste and strawberry aroma. Wonderful for jam: the berries are whole, and the aroma is all over the house. And what aromatic compotes! And what delicious dumplings you will lick your fingers!
The berries are not baked in the sun, because the not too long stalk hides them in the leaves.
The variety is frost-resistant, in winter it can withstand frosts up to 20-25 ° without snow (this often happens in our country).
Quite a powerful root system, the variety easily propagates with a mustache.
In one place, the Ruby pendant has been growing for me for 20 years. Of course, every three to four years I remove the old bushes and plant the mustache in the aisles, thus forming new rows. It is not possible to change the place, since everything grows in its place - I won’t remove fruit-bearing currants and plant strawberries or raspberries, especially since it will be useless with raspberries: they are subject to the same diseases as strawberries.
This variety is mid-season, with friendly fruiting, with a short ripening period (from 15 to 20 days). It just suits me. I harvested the entire crop, distributed it, prepared it for the winter - and continue to work on the Queen Elizabeth 2 variety.
The ruby pendant grows on slightly acidic and neutral soils, and I have just such a one (nettle, horsetail, horse sorrel do not grow).
The berries are beautiful, shiny, appetizing, and this is important - they cheer you up! You look, and the eye rejoices! True, a variety of medium yield.
RULES OF CARE FOR STRAWBERRY IN BELGOROD REGION
I chose unpretentious strawberry varieties for myself, but for all the time I tried many different ways to increase the yield. I decided to plant strawberries on high beds: it’s more convenient for me to take care of them. Everyone now and then talks about mulch, but it bothers me near the bush, besides, after watering, the straw begins to blacken, mold appears, so I put straws only under the berries.
I like to loosen the ground, I like to work as a chopper, it gives me pleasure, but as for the grass, I have chickens and rabbits, they really need the grass. There are two rows on the bed, between them there is a groove, which I gradually fill with water. The earth is saturated, and moisture comes to the roots.
On another bed, I stuck inverted bottles, pour water into them, and it is gradually brought to the roots.
In early spring, immediately after pruning (we have it April 15-20), I use a 1:20 infusion of chicken manure or a 1:15 infusion of rabbit manure to build up green mass. Two weeks later, I feed with an infusion of grass with nettles: three-quarters of the tank is filled with grass, nettles and filled with water. We insist until an unpleasant smell and bubbles appear.
I have this tank under the film in the greenhouse, and at the end of the garden I cover the nettle with a film in the spring so that it grows faster. I dilute the mother liquor 1:10 and pour half a liter under a bush.

COOL STRAWBERRY EXPERIMENT
In order to enjoy strawberries as early as possible, I decided that I would grow the earliest fruits of Elizabeth in a tiny greenhouse for my grandchildren, of whom I have five. Berries begin to sing in early May. At the end, after the 20th, the Ruby Pendant begins to ripen. One garden bed with Elizabeth in the open field in June-July pleases us with a wonderful berry, and on the other two, the berries begin to ripen in August and delight us until winter.
And all because I cut off all the flower stalks in these beds in the spring and thereby slowed down fruiting.
On these beds in October-November, strawberries still bloom, turn red, the berries are sweet, strong. I put arcs, cover with spunbond and continue to harvest - albeit a little, but it's cool: in November, my own berries!
A lot of berries and peduncles go under the snow, and I noticed that in spring berries appear on these bushes earlier. You can, of course, make a heated greenhouse, but these are costs that pensioners cannot afford with all their will.
And I also decided to experiment - I planted several bushes with a lot of flowers and berries in flower pots and put them on the windowsill. By the end of December, all the berries gradually ripened. In general, I really like Elizabeth 2, especially in autumn - the berries are strong, sweet. Of course, in the summer, during the mass harvest, it is inferior in taste to the Ruby Pendant and other summer varieties of strawberries, but I extended the pleasure - I ate fresh strawberries for the New Year!
MY SECRETS OF STRAWBERRY CARE
I am often asked what secrets I hide when growing strawberries. Yes, none! I just love working in the garden, I love the earth, I love nature. The most important thing: feed on time, water and be sure to cut off the mustache.
For the propagation of strawberries, I allocated a small plot of land, I cut off all the flower stalks, root my mustache, and then distribute it to those who wish - my strawberries grow in all the surrounding villages.
And my main secret is that in early spring, as soon as the weather allows, we pull the film over the arcs and get something like a greenhouse. There I put herbal infusions.
In our summer, during the ripening period, it rains every year, and many berries disappear, diseases, rot, etc. use) and hide it until next spring.
Yes, there is enough trouble with strawberries, many cannot withstand such "red tape". But those who stubbornly go to the goal, always with a harvest!
Strawberries are probably the most common berry in the world, it normalizes blood pressure (I was convinced from my own experience) and blood sugar levels, improves immunity, has a beneficial effect on the skin, teeth, and even improves mood! Grow strawberries, this wonderful berry, stay optimistic and be healthy!
By the way
Properly frozen garden strawberries practically do not lose nutrients and natural taste. Select a not crumpled, ripe berry, wash and remove the leaves. Dry on a towel for 1 hour, then spread on a silicone mat and place in the freezer for 2 hours. Then you can distribute the strawberries in bags or plastic containers. It is also convenient to freeze mashed potatoes: grind a clean, dry berry with a blender.
