DO YOU HAVE SPOTS ON THE GRAPES? HOW TO IDENTIFY A DISEASE?
Spots are one of the most common signs of plant disease. Consider 4 common ailments that an amateur gardener can recognize by the “drawing” on grape leaves.
1. Mildew on grapes (downy mildew)
Spots. Yellow on the upper side of the leaf, and on the reverse side - a whitish powdery coating. The affected tissue dies and dries up. With a strong development of this fungal disease, the bushes can completely lose their leaves. When old leaves are affected at the end of the season, numerous small spots appear on them, mainly along the veins, with weak sporulation.
What to do. Before and after flowering, spray the bushes with a fungicide (Ridomil Gold, Mikal, Delan - according to the instructions), and then every 12-14 days.
2. OIDIUM GRAPE (Powdery Mildew)
Spots. A continuous whitish-gray coating that appears mainly on the upper side of the leaf. The leaves gradually dry out and fall off. Green shoots are covered with dark gray spots, grow poorly and ripen, and die in winter.
What to do. If signs of illness appear, use Strobi, Topaz, Falcon preparations. Next spring, when three leaves appear on the shoots, treat the bushes with a solution of colloidal sulfur (90 g per 10 liters of water) or with the sulfur preparation Thiovit Jet or Cumulus. Repeat this treatment after flowering, as well as during the season 3-6 times every 10-20 days.
3. GRAPE ANTHRACNOSE
Spots. Brown with a dark or reddish border. The affected tissue dies and falls out, leaving holes in the leaves.
What to do. Cut off affected vines and burn immediately. Treatments against mildew reduce the harmfulness of this disease as well.
4. CHLOROSIS OF GRAPES
Spots. At first, the leaves turn yellow-green, and then the entire leaf turns yellow (only green areas remain along the main veins), the edges dry out. The lower leaves on the bushes remain green.
What to do. The causes of the disease may be different. Often chlorosis is closely related to an excess of soluble lime in the soil. Spray the vineyard with a solution of ferrous sulfate (50 g per 10 liters of water) or apply a dry fertilizer to the soil under the bushes (200 g per plant for incorporation) in October or early spring.
