THE MOST BEAUTIFUL NEW VARIETIES FROM PERENNIUMS
Among the new varieties and hybrids of herbaceous perennials, which I, as an agronomist, had a chance to test recently, I would like to note some of the most, in my opinion, interesting and deserving attention. Some forgotten "unfashionable" cultures, the so-called plants from the grandmother's garden, have found a new image and place in flower beds.
Let me start with hairy rudbeckia (Rudbeckia hirta), which can be a real star of the garden from the second half of summer until the very frost. In a sunny place, its varieties will form the volume of a flower garden or can be used as a border.
Tall (up to 120 cm) Cheyenne Gold is ideal for the landscape. The flowers are large, up to 15 cm in diameter, attract bees and butterflies to the garden, tolerate rainy weather perfectly. In addition, they can be used for cutting, as they retain freshness for a long time.
Amarillo Gold is compact, no more than 35 cm high, but also with large flowers. Due to its low growth, it is suitable for planting not only in flower beds, but also in pots, as well as for cutting into small bouquets. Both varieties are winter-hardy and can winter in the middle lane without shelter.
In recent years, the selection of Echinacea (Echinacea hybrida) surprises with its variety of colors and flower shapes. The Artisan collection is a series of the first hybrid echinacea from seeds of American selection. Prior to this, such coloring could only be obtained vegetatively. One of the most beautiful colors in Artisan Red Ombre. The flowers have the effect of a chameleon: when they fade, the dark red color becomes lighter, almost orange. The bush reaches a height of 50 cm, suitable for landscape and flowerpots.
Artisan Soft Orange is a new orange shade. The bright orange color fades over time, becoming a softer tone. Can be grown both outdoors and in pots.
The main advantage of the new varieties is that, unlike the previous hybrid echinacea of similar colors, they have a higher winter hardiness, which means they can winter in central Russia with light shelter.

Worthy of attention is sunflower-shaped heliopsis (Heliopsis helianthoides var. Scabra) variety Loran Sunshine with dark green veins on white leaves and yellow flowers up to 10 cm in diameter. Plant height is about 80 cm. The stems are dense, rigid and branched. It blooms in July-August and can be used for cutting. Winters well. In a lighted place with light soil can live up to 4 years.
Whorled Coreopsis (Coreopsis verticillata) is a versatile perennial for mixborders and rabatok in the sun. This species is distinguished by strongly branched shoots and does not require frequent transplantation and division. Can grow in one place up to 6 years. Photophilous and drought-resistant, not picky about the soil.
An interesting variety is Cho-rasan Yellow Bicolor. Flowers with a diameter of about 3 cm have a two-tone color - a dark red middle and bright yellow edges of the petals. Flowering is very plentiful and long: from June to September. The height of the plant is about 5 cm. It is advisable to remove the faded inflorescences, then the flowers can be admired in the fall.
This year, for the first time, I appreciated the new colors of Gaillardia (Gaillardia x grandiflora) Arizona. This is the very first series of Gaillardia from seeds. The height of the plant is not higher than 30 cm. The perennial blooms in the year of sowing. Flowering is long (starts from the end of May and lasts until autumn), but maintenance is required to maintain it: pruning of faded inflorescences, which stimulates the formation of new ones. The plant does not impose special requirements on the composition of the soil and conditions, it can grow in one place up to 3 years. The only negative is that the color is not entirely clear, there is a yellow tint on the petals, which is not always convenient for combination in flower beds.
For flower beds in partial shade, we can recommend a new variety of one of the most popular perennials - Astilbe Arends (Astilbe arendsii). Ideal for landscaping, Rhapsody comes in a mixture of red and pink, carmine and cream, but single colors can also be used. Plant height 75-85 cm. Due to the beautiful foliage, the perennial is decorative all season. The variety is winter-hardy, like all astilbes, tolerates slight waterlogging.
Herbaceous perennials in the botanical sense are plants that can live in one place for more than two years. The aerial part does not hibernate, but a new plant is formed from the existing rhizomes every year. The general trend of most new varieties of perennials familiar to us is the need for additional shelter for wintering. I tried to select mainly those novelties that are distinguished by good winter hardiness, but I would like to tell you about one more variety that can be used as a flyer or grown with winter shelter.
Lofant (Agastache) Kudos Ambrosia has an interesting color: some of the flowers have a pink tint, and some are orange. The height of the plants after wintering was 40-50 cm. Last year, the variety did not perform very well, the bush fell apart and lay down. Perhaps the reason for the failure was in agricultural technology, since at the last stage of cultivation the plant needs good lighting, daytime temperatures of 18-20 ° and slightly lower at night. This season, after wintering in an unheated greenhouse, dense and voluminous inflorescences formed. Hardiness zone 5 suggests growing the variety as an annual or short-lived perennial with wintering under cover. When grown in summer cottages, a basement or a cool veranda can be recommended as a wintering place.
Lofant is good in group plantings, it is planted in mixborders, containers and flowerpots, often grown in fragrance gardens, used in dry bouquets.
PERENNIUMS IN THE GARDEN AND IN THE GARDEN
Now in gardens, in addition to the usual perennials, you can increasingly find spicy herbs. They make up whole compositions, ornamental gardens, spicy-aromatic gardens, planted in pots and containers. As interesting novelties, I would like to note the following.
Early ripe sorrel (Rumex) Bloody Doock with large smooth green leaves, on which bright red veins stand out clearly. The petiole is colored red-yellow. The taste is slightly acidic, slightly tart, lemon aroma. The plant is worthy of a flower garden, can be grown in pots or containers to decorate windows and balconies.
Apple mint (Mentha rotundifolia) Pinedo Ananasminze is distinguished by variegated leaves - green with a white border, which have a delicate delicate pineapple aroma, contain
menthol. Plant height 30-40 cm, blooms from late July to September. It grows best in bright places.
Mini Mint is an ornamental, fast-growing variety of Corsican mint.
(Mentha requienii) is only about 5 cm high, which allows it to be used as a ground cover. It looks interesting and unusual in flowerpots and pots. Grows well in full sun and partial shade. It has a delicate aroma, but the seed manufacturer does not recommend eating this mint, although it says that the plant is safe for health.
