Rules for planting conifers at the end of summer

PLANTING OF CONIFERS IN AUGUST
The end of August is the best time for planting conifers with a closed root system. Later - undesirable, since these crops need more time for good rooting and adaptation in a new place than hardwoods. What to pay close attention to?
1. SAVE THE EARTH CLOM
When planting, it is important to save an earthen room. Otherwise, the roots will dry out and die. Conifer planting material is usually sold in a container. Therefore, the day before, water the plant well and carefully remove it from the container. And only after installing the coma in the landing pit, carefully, so as not to collapse, release it from the packaging. Some gardeners even leave the burlap in the soil (it will rot over time), removing only the strapping.
2. SET UP THE LANDING PIT
The planting site for conifers should be wider than the diameter of the clod and deeper than its height: dig a hole at least 30-45 cm wider and 15-30 cm deeper than the earthen clod.
At the bottom of the pit, drainage is desirable (a layer of broken brick and sand 15-20 cm). After installing the coma, cover the air gaps with soil. But not ordinary - a substrate from a pine forest is perfect (along with coniferous litter and dried old needles). Or prepare a mixture of soddy, leafy soil, peat and sand (2:2:1:1). It is useful to add phosphorus-potassium fertilizer to the planting pit (50-60 g per pit). After planting, mulch the trunk circle with sawdust or peat with a layer of 5 cm. Then water each plant abundantly.

3. DO NOT DEEP THE ROOT NECK
When planting, pay attention to the root collar. If this section of the seedling is in the ground, rotting will begin, the nutrition of the root system will be disrupted, and the bark will die. To avoid problems, put a shovel on the finished hole - the root collar should be at the level of the cutting.
PLACE FOR LANDING CONIFEROUS
Plant junipers and arborvitae with blue or variegated needles in light partial shade - their needles will be brighter there.
Thujas, firs and junipers with golden and green (all shades) crowns are more suitable for brightly lit sunny places.
Plant creeping junipers on mounds with a height and diameter of 50-60 cm so that in winter they do not end up in a lowland. Otherwise, their needles will quickly get wet there - and the plants will die.
In winter, protect pyramidal thujas from the north side from the cold wind by planting them near the southern wall of the house, gazebo or some other building. In this case, the whole tree should be well lit by the sun.

I buy the youngest coniferous seedlings - they are cheaper than "teenagers". I add a little clean sand, peat, necessarily coniferous litter and forest soil to the planting pit - I go to plant for them. I also put a little fertilizer for conifers, add water and mix everything. Having sprinkled the roots of the plant with soil, I lightly tamp it down, mulch it with needles and tell the seedling: “Here, this is your new place, live here, be healthy and make me happy.” I always talk to my plants.
When choosing a seedling, I carefully look at the roots. The old ones are completely yellow, on the healthy ones you can see a lot of thin white roots - this is the most important sign of a good survival rate of the seedling.
Which mulch is best? I have tested this experimentally. Ants settled under the gravel bedding, the wood chips sheltered the slugs. Therefore, I settled on mowed lawn grass and needles.
