MULTI-COLORED RASPBERRY - YELLOW AND BLACK
When raspberries ripen, each housewife returns from the market with a basket full of berries. What can we say about gardeners and summer residents who grow raspberries themselves. Everyone strives to collect ripe fragrant berries in order to eat plenty fresh, to prepare for the winter. Hostesses always cook raspberry jam. Who is from a cold, and who is so simple, for tea. It's delicious! Prepared from raspberries and marshmallows, and jelly, and jams, berries are frozen. Raspberries make excellent wine and liqueurs.
RASPBERRY AS AN ANCIENT CULTURE
Raspberry was first described in his writings by the Roman scientist Pliny the Elder (century AD). And only in the XVII century. it was described by the botanist Carl Linnaeus and given its present Latin name, Rubus Ideus. The generic name "rubus" described the red (crimson) color of its berries, and the specific "ideus" reflected the place of the first find of raspberries - in Greece on Mount Ida.
Interestingly, raspberries were introduced into the culture before they received "official status". So, in England and Germany, it was grown back in the XNUMXth century, in Russia - from the XNUMXth century, and in America it was introduced into culture at the end of the XNUMXth century.
USEFUL BERRY
Raspberries have a wonderful taste, specific aroma, high (5-11%) sugar content, among which fructose and glucose predominate. In addition, they contain a large amount of organic acids, vitamins and trace elements. Of particular note is the high content of potassium and iron, which makes raspberries extremely useful. Regular consumption of raspberries contributes to the improvement of the human body. Doctors recommend eating about 4 kg of raspberries a year.
Another advantage is that raspberries accumulate ecotoxicants (heavy metals, radionuclides, herbicides, etc.) to a lesser extent than other crops. But the popularity of raspberries is due not only to high taste and healing properties. This is a very grateful crop with high yields, quick fruiting and ease of cultivation.
All this, as a rule, refers to raspberries with red berries. But there are varieties with yellow and black fruits. And are they just as good?
YELLOW RASPBERRY - DESCRIPTION
It belongs to the same genus as the common raspberry. Its agricultural technology does not differ from the usual red raspberries. Only the color of the berries is different. Moreover, yellow-fruited raspberries also have ordinary varieties that bear fruit once on two-year-old shoots, and remontant varieties that bear fruit in one year on both two-year and one-year shoots. The berries come in all shades of yellow, orange, sometimes with a pink or red tan.
Due to the low content of anthocyanins, yellow raspberries do not cause allergic reactions and diathesis in children. It can be eaten by young children, pregnant women, people with diabetes, etc. In addition, it has many useful properties of red raspberries - a high content of vitamins, macro - and microelements, contains folic acid, glucose, fructose, organic acids
There are much fewer varieties of yellow-fruited raspberries than red ones. The first, back in the early 80s of the last century, was the Yellow Giant variety, bred by Professor V. V. Kichina. The variety made a splash. It was one of the first large-fruited raspberry varieties in the former Soviet Union.
The popularity of the variety was so high that it was not possible to provide everyone with seedlings. Then dishonest gardeners began to grow the Yellow Giant from seeds. It is clear that the varietal characteristics of the seedlings were very different from the parent variety. Therefore, dozens of different “Yellow Giants” are still “walking” across the expanses of the former Union. But I was lucky to bring the original variety from the Timiryazev Academy.
Berry weighing up to 10 g, pale lemon color in the sun and brighter in partial shade. The yield is very high, at the level of modern varieties. The variety is partially remontant, in the conditions of the country in autumn fruiting is concentrated on the tips of young shoots, while the main crop ripens at the end of June - on two-year-old shoots. The berries are very sweet (Yellow Giant is still considered one of the most delicious yellow-fruited varieties), but soft, they do not withstand long transportation. For this reason, the variety has become widespread mainly among summer residents. Resistance to fungal diseases is also rather weak. Therefore, today it can be attributed to endangered varieties.
The next most popular, perhaps, was the remontant Polish variety Porana Rosa (Rogapa rosa), which means “Morning dew”. The yield of this variety is very high, the berries are round, large, weighing up to 8 g. In Poland, the variety was grown on an industrial scale. Its disadvantage is that that the berries burn out in the sun, become pale and do not gain enough sugars, always with sourness. Therefore, at the moment it is grown only by those who are not familiar with more modern varieties.
Based on my experience, I can advise Golden Queen varieties for household and industrial cultivation. Zyugana gold, Lumina, Orange miracle, K-2.
Golden Queen - a variety of ordinary fruiting, has replaced the Yellow Giant. The berries are round, weighing up to 8 g, very sweet. Transportability is higher than the Yellow Giant, and it is less affected by fungal diseases. It also bears fruit on the tops of young shoots in autumn.
Zyugana gold - an analogue of the usual Zyugana, but with a bright yellow berry. Remontant variety. Shoots are slightly prickly, powerful, can be grown without a garter. The berries are round-conical, weighing up to 10 g, sweet, fragrant. Productivity and transportability are very high. Increased resistance to fungal diseases.
Lumina is a remontant variety. Shoots are slightly prickly, powerful, can be grown without a garter. The berries are round-conical, weighing up to 10 g, bright yellow, sometimes with a pink tan, do not fade in the sun, with a rich taste and aroma. Productivity, transportability and disease resistance are very high.
Orange Miracle is a remontant variety. Shoots are slightly prickly, require a garter. The berries are the largest among yellow-fruited ones (weighing 12 g or more), elongated, up to 5 cm long (similar to small fingers), orange in color, amazing taste. But the transportability is low, the berries are only suitable for growing for their own needs. Productivity and disease resistance are very high, K-2 is one of the last varieties of selection by Professor I. V. Kazakov. The shoots are powerful, straight, slightly thorny, can be grown without a garter. The berries are elongated-conical, more than 3 cm long, bright yellow with a red-orange tan, do not fade in the sun, beautiful and tasty. Transportability is very high. The variety is suitable for industrial cultivation. It has a very high yield, resistance to diseases and pests. Unfortunately, the variety has not yet received a decent assessment, it is not widely distributed.
There are still many old and new yellow-fruited raspberry varieties, but they either have some significant drawbacks or have not yet been sufficiently studied. So for now, I'm stuck with the above.
As for the yellow-fruited raspberry market, it is still small. This is due to the fact that it is not taken for processing and freezing. It is because of the color of the berry. But on the market it is in constant demand, and its price is higher than conventional varieties.
Recently, mixtures have become especially popular when there are red and yellow raspberries in one container, and sometimes even blackberries. This item sells out instantly!
Yellow-fruited raspberries have another drawback - dechimerization. This is when a yellow berry turns red over time. But the percentage of dechimerization is small and can be put up with.

BLACK RASPBERRY = DESCRIPTION
Another type of raspberry that can still be classified as exotic is black raspberry. Some consider it to be something between a common raspberry and a blackberry. However, it is a completely separate species of Rubus occidentalis.
Black raspberries are very useful and can be used for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes. They contain a large amount of P-active substances, anthocyanins, proteins, folic acid, fiber, pectins, organic acids, vitamin B9, a lot of magnesium and various sugars. Leaves and branches contain coumarins, which improve blood clotting.
This plant is native to the northern United States, where it grows wild.
The berries are black, with a bluish bloom, sweet, rich in taste, with a pleasant aftertaste, weighing an average of 5 g. Productivity is 4-6 kg per bush. There are both regular and remontant varieties that can be harvested twice. The biology of black raspberries is more similar to blackberries. This is a bush up to 3 m high, the shoots are powerful, straight, prickly, require a garter. They do not give shoots, but, like blackberries, they can multiply by segments of roots, as well as by rooting tops. Frost resistance is very high. At least never heard of black raspberry freezing. It also tolerates heat and drought very well. It is responsive to organic and mineral fertilizers, although it can grow and bear fruit on poor soils.
The most famous variety is Cumberland. which appeared in the 80s of the last century. But he did not gain much popularity. The berries were small, the drupes were large, the taste was mediocre. I also grew it and refused because of the futility. I thought I would never grow black raspberries again, but I was wrong. A few years ago I had a chance to see fruiting and try new varieties of berries. It was something amazing! To be honest, I was surprised how much their taste surpassed that of Cumberland. So black raspberry was prescribed in my area.
At the moment, 4 varieties are most popular, two ordinary and two remontant.
Normal fruiting varieties are early Munger and late Mac Black. The berries of these varieties weighing about 4 g, have approximately the same taste, only ripen at different times. Shoots over 2 m high, powerful, straight. But because of the huge number of berries, they require garters, otherwise they can break off.
Remontant varieties - Nivot and Ohio. Nivot, with berries weighing up to 4 g, and Ohio - up to 5 g. They bear fruit twice a year. First, at the end of June on last year's shoots, and in September - on young ones. The summer harvest is about twice as high as the autumn one.
Black raspberries do not need pruning and shaping. Resistance to diseases and pests is very high, many grow it without any treatments.
There are no industrial black raspberry plantations in Europe, only in America. It is grown mainly in household plots. I have not seen berries in the markets, but I think this is a temporary phenomenon. After all, the berry is very tasty and fragrant. In addition, unpretentious and easy to grow.
Why not expand the range of berries you grow with yellow and black raspberries?
