THE SCIENCE OF HARVESTING APPLES
Trees and shrubs sag from the abundance of juicy fruits.
So I want to quickly lighten them and collect all this charm. But don't rush! It is important not only to harvest, but to do it right. Otherwise storage is not guaranteed.
WHEN TO PICK APPLES?
First of all, you need to pick up all the carrion.
It is important for us that nothing is wasted, right?
Fruits damaged by the codling moth or knocked down by the wind will not be stored, but they can be immediately put into compote, jelly or dried. In addition, remaining on the ground, they will add hordes of new pests to the garden.
Fruits are harvested depending on the variety: first summer, then autumn, later winter. But here the golden mean is important:
- never rush to harvest,
- but do not let him hang on a tree for a long time.
If you pick too early, the skin of the fruit is still not strong enough, they will easily evaporate moisture, wrinkle and shrink. Who likes to eat sour hard fruits? Let them hang, they will be juicier. But God forbid they overripe - the flesh will darken and the fruit will not lie for a long time.
HOW TO PICK APPLES CORRECTLY?
How would you more accurately determine the collection period? And the garden itself will tell you. If healthy fruits begin to fall, it's time to collect. In addition, the fact that the fruit is ripe is indicated by the color and taste corresponding to the variety. Pluck the fruits only after they dry from the morning dew. Wet ones spoil quickly.
First of all, I pick the largest and most ripe fruits, which are very easily separated from the branches. I start from the bottom and gradually rise to the top of the crown. Fruits should not fall, even from a small height! Picking apples and pears is also not necessary anyhow.
Take the fruit in your hand, press the end of the stalk with your index finger and gently lift it up. Do not pull the fruit towards you - this way you risk tearing off the stalk, and the fruit will be stored worse. Putting the collected apples and pears in a container, try not to beat each other, and the container should be in a cool place.
For storage, leave the most flawless apples. They should not have rot and no skin damage, process the rest immediately. If a spoiled apple gets into the general storage, healthy fruits can also rot from it. Happy harvest!

The skin of a normally ripened apple and pear is covered with oils, resins and a wax coating, which protect against adverse external conditions. Therefore, fruits intended for storage must be plucked with extreme caution, trying to protect them from mechanical damage.
