USEFUL COMPATIBILITY OF VEGETABLES AND FLOWERS IN THE PLOT
Plants are like people: we are friends with some, we are neutral with others, we can’t stand the third. The same goes for vegetables and flowers. There are many companion plants, the community of which contributes to their mutual growth and development, increases productivity. This property is used by skilled gardeners.
LIGHT AND SHADOW
It is generally accepted that vegetable plants love the sun, and meanwhile, some crops not only tolerate shade well, but in hot weather they even grow better in shady places. Shade-tolerant plants should be protected from the sun by planting them next to tall crops.
High: peas, melon (on a trellis); corn, cucumbers (on a trellis); sunflower, tomatoes, beans, curly beans.
Medium-height crops: eggplant, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, paprika, celery.
Low-growing crops: cabbage, herbs, chard, carrots, cucumbers, radishes, lettuce, beets, spinach.
FLOWER AND VEGETABLE COMPOSITIONS
The best choices are companions that can attract and shelter ladybugs, lacewings, and other beneficial insects.
The famous helper plants - marigolds, basil - not only repel harmful insects, but also fight them, confusing them with their strong smell, making it difficult to find tasty vegetable crops.
Planting companion plants amaze the eye with a riot of colors. Bright green parsley leaves are juxtaposed with burgundy mangold tops, yellow-orange marigold heads, and purple kale leaves.
When choosing companions for any family of vegetable crops, some kind of umbrella plant will do.
Parsley, dill, coriander, aster family - marigolds, daisies, sunflowers. All these plants are great neighbors! The sunflower serves as a support for the beans. The Aster family includes many flowers that attract ladybugs, predatory bugs and riders.
Next to the garden I break a small flower garden of these plants. Insects will rest here after hunting in the beds.
Onions do not need special help from companion plants; its pungent smell repels most garden pests. But what a beauty when bright petunias bloom among green feathers. They also cover the soil with their foliage, and serve as a shelter for beneficial insects. Petunias go well with nectar-rich medicinal chamomile.
I plant kosmeyu among eggplants. Wrinkled basil foliage will make the composition even more interesting.
Cosmea - a universal companion plant - feeds insects with nectar, without taking up much space in the garden.
I plant nasturtium in my garden every year. Its curly stems are effectively intertwined with long lashes of cucumbers and pumpkins. Nasturtium repels beetles, leaf fall. She feels great among the plantings of the "three sisters": corn, beans and pumpkins!

PARADISE FOR BENEFICIAL INSECTS
If there is not enough space for companion plants, you can increase the height of the garden. You can pull the ropes against the wall and let the cucumbers curl, and take the vacant place with fennel and nasturtium, you can plant cosmea along the edges.
Calendula is also a companion plant, its flowers attract beneficial insects. I plant them on a pumpkin.
Dill is a great companion for vegetables. We grow dill and Brussels sprouts together. Dill attracts riders to the garden.
Angelica, dill, fennel, cumin are representatives of the umbrella, and all attract beneficial insects.
Chamomile is a medicinal plant used to attract hoverflies and the same riders.
Tansy collects ladybugs, hoverflies and riders.
On the plot, leeks, pumpkin, cabbage grow mixed with nasturtium, pansies, marigolds, basil, parsley. A variety of vegetable crops planted on the beds, along with herbs and flowers, allow you to admire the unique combination of colors and attract beneficial insects. The more variety in each garden bed planted with companion plants, the richer the harvest.
