BUDDLEIA OF DAVID, OR BUTTERFLY BUSH
© Author: Nikolai CHROMOV
This is one of the most beautiful shrubs. It is not yet common in our gardens, therefore it causes surprised and admiring glances when it blooms.
The birthplace of David's buddley is China, there, as well as in our south and in the center of the country, a shrub can grow three or even four meters, but in colder regions its height is unlikely to be more than one and a half meters. The thing is that the plant does not have outstanding winter hardiness, and if it is not covered, it will freeze to the soil level every year, but in half a summer it will quickly recover and delight you with flowering again.
BTW
This shrub forms flowers precisely on the paces of the current year, it can bloom as early as July, but it usually pleases the eye in August, throughout the whole month, sometimes lingering at the beginning of September. Well, if it is not very hot and there is enough moisture, then some of its flowers can be seen even in October.
Its inflorescences are very elegant, have a purple hue, as well as a very pleasant aroma, close to the aroma of many beloved hyacinths, which resembles honey.
The beauty of the flower and its fragrance tend to attract swarms of pollinators, and often it is butterflies, which is why this shrub is sometimes referred to as the "butterfly bush".
BUDDEL: FEATURES OF GROWING
If you want to see lush flowering, then provide the shrub with nutritious soil with plenty of moisture, and also place it in a sunny and well-closed place from the cold, then it will be absolutely fine.
The soil during the season should be kept slightly moist, avoiding overflow and drying out. If the soil is low-nutrient, then it is advisable to fertilize, for example, nitroammophoska - a teaspoon at the beginning of the year.
As for the type of soil, the best option is sandy loam or loam, but the pH, most importantly, is not acidic; well buddleya grows on neutral soil or slightly alkaline.
It is necessary to take care of preparing the plant for wintering. Usually in autumn, after the first frosts have passed and the leaf blades become dark and lose turgor, it is necessary to cut all the shoots to the soil level, and cover the soil around the bush with humus or compost with a layer of 5-6 cm.
For even more insulation, you can throw a layer of fallen leaves a couple of tens of centimeters thick on top. So you save the roots and buds on them, and they will shoot in the new season (this is appropriate to do in cold regions, excluding the south and center of the country).
If you are a resident of the south, then you should not prune, but in Central Russia you can cut off half the length of the shoot so that you can cover the plant with any covering material. It is interesting that in buddleia, not old, but younger shoots are often more resistant to frost, but they may not survive return frosts after the start of the growing season.
As for pests, only a spider mite can hit a buddley. When the summer is dry, without rain and hot, acaricides can be used against it.

REPRODUCTION OF BUDDLEIA
Buddleia can be propagated by seeds, but they may not have time to ripen if you are not a resident of the south. You can sow seeds both in open ground and in a greenhouse.
Not bad budsley propagated by lignified cuttings, as well as green when cut at the end of May.
Plant seedlings obtained independently or purchased in planting holes up to 45 cm deep and of the same diameter. Pour a bucket of river sand and a bucket of humus into the base, mix everything and plant a shrub on this pile.
You can add 500 g of ash and 15 grams of nitroammophoska there. Be sure to mix all fertilizers well with the soil and water.
BUDDLEYA TIPS FOR GROWING AND CARE
PLANT THE BUDDLEY "ON A STUM"
I didn’t have time to cover my buddleias and weigelas at the dacha. What threatens plants?
Maria Mironchenko, Moscow
— Warm-loving perennials can be grown as herbaceous plants: in the fall, cut them to a height of 10 cm, and in the spring, a young bush will be formed from new shoots growing from the base of the stems from dormant buds. In your case, you will have to prune in the spring. Only plants capable of forming shoots from a stump are suitable for such cultivation. To better guarantee successful overwintering, it is better to cover the base of the bush with earth or sand.
Among such shrubs there are flowering ones, in which inflorescences form on new shoots, and decorative-leaved ones.
You can trim “to the stump” only those plants whose roots have grown sufficiently and have taken root. If your pets are young, shorten their shoots to a healthy bud and wait until they get stronger. Don't forget about annual fertilizing of plants pruned to the stump!
NAME | FEATURES |
The Buddha of David | This is the most stable type of buddleia in our conditions, but even it often freezes. Bushes planted “on a stump” with good care grow to about 1 m, then bloom beautifully in the second half of summer |
Scumpia | The non-varietal form overwinters normally in the middle zone, growing to 2 m or more. Purple-leaved, variegated and golden-leaved varieties freeze seriously. After severe pruning, their shoots grow to 60-80 cm and have time to bloom |
Weigel | Modern highly decorative hybrids freeze a lot. Those cut “on a stump” in the fall winter well. In summer, neat bushes up to 60 cm high are formed. Sometimes you can even observe flowering, but in these forms the main decorative feature is not flowers, but leaves, which with this method of growing only become more beautiful |
White acacia | Decorative-leaved varieties and varieties with twisting shoots freeze slightly. When cut in spring they form spectacular openwork bushes. Although this also produces strong root shoots, the growth of which will have to be limited |
