WHAT IS THE DANGER OF THE FIRST FROST IN THE GARDEN
The beginning of November is usually marked by the first frosts.
Of course, in the northern regions they may be earlier, but nevertheless, in most of our country, it is in November that the first noticeable frost is felt.
Not everyone has harvested the entire crop by this time, sometimes apples hang on trees, and late cabbage, pumpkins, beets, and carrots can still grow on the beds. On the site, late remontant raspberries can still ripen, which are harvested until the snow falls.
FIRST FROST AND RASPBERRY
If frost hits raspberries, then the berry will be watery, lose its taste and aroma, and lose most of its useful properties. Therefore, such berries are best placed in the freezer, put in containers. Another option is to make jam, and, of course, compote will also be in the subject.
FIRST FROST AND PEARS
They, too, can still hang on trees, especially when it comes to "oak" late varieties. Those that have fallen under frost will certainly not be stored. It is better to harvest when the temperature is positive, at least 5 degrees, otherwise the fruits will lie for no more than a week.
FIRST FROST AND LATER APPLES
If they fall under frost or severe frost, they will lose most of their taste properties. In addition, they can crack, and, of course, they will not be stored. The very pulp of the fruit will become like cotton wool. These apples are not always pleasant to eat. But they can be soaked with cabbage, as well as make jam or compote.
FROST AND BEET
If it falls under frost, then cracks may form on the top of each root crop, and such a crop will need to be immediately processed, it will not be stored. The ideal option is to marinate or freeze these root crops by cutting them into cubes: in winter, they can be added both to borscht and salads.
FIRST FROST AND PUMPKIN
If you want the pumpkins to lie on the beds for as long as possible, then they need to be covered with burlap, but still, after the first frost, they must be brought into storage. In some cases, shelter with straw or non-woven covering material helps. With severe freezing, the pumpkin will not be stored - it will quickly begin to rot. Therefore, it must be put into processing immediately - for example, cook lecho or something similar.
FROZES AND CARROTS
She is usually not afraid of severe frosts, sometimes even after the first snow falls, carrots do not deteriorate. In the southern region, it sometimes persists until spring in the beds, it is only slightly insulated with fallen leaves. The secret to the preservation of root crops during frosts lies in the large amount of sugar that carrots save, so often they are not in a hurry to dig it up.
LATE CABBAGE
Without damage, it can withstand up to eight degrees of frost, and for a long period. If the cabbage has fallen under frost, then just let it thaw during the day without cutting it down, but after it thaws, you can start harvesting it and subsequent use.
BTW
It is clear that we are not talking about chaenomeles, viburnum and mountain ash, they can hang on branches, and for viburnum, for example, it will even be a plus if it gets frost.
