CUCUMBERS AND PUMPKINS IN BARREL
It is known that our gardener brother does not like to throw anything away. That's where the old barrels come in handy. Firstly, with a “barrel” planting, you can sow and plant seedlings earlier. The height of the barrel is one meter, and the earth warms up faster. Secondly, cucumbers grow more intensively and the yield is higher. Thirdly, the costs of both forces and funds are minimal. It does not need to bend and does not require a lot of covering material.
CUCUMBERS IN A BARREL
For two years in a row I have been growing cucumbers not only in the garden, but also in a barrel, and I am completely convinced of the advantages of the second method.
I make only a small shelter: I bend two thin metal rods in the shape of an arc and put them crosswise on the barrel, put a large plastic bag on top and tie it around with a rope. For this purpose, large bags in which bananas are packed are ideal.
While the cucumber plants are small, there is enough space under the arcs for them, and when they become large, the frosts will pass. By the way, less fertile land for a barrel is needed: only the layer of earth in which the roots are located, and this is no more than 30 cm, I fill the rest with what I have to.
You can put grass in a barrel all summer, not forgetting to carefully compact it, and plant cucumbers there next year. It is only important that the barrel has holes on the sides or a hole in the bottom.
The barrel allows you to save space on the site. If the cucumber bed should be located in the most “running” open sunny place, then the barrel can be placed, for example, in the sun between the currant bushes, near the fence, so that it would not be difficult for your neighbor to water it in case if on a hot July day you will not be at the cottage.
Decorative planting is also a plus. A barrel with evenly hanging flowering dark green cucumber lashes looks beautiful.
The disadvantage of this method, I would attribute the increased need for watering, since the earth in the barrel warms up much more than in the garden, and the moisture evaporates faster.
I advise you to sow the seeds in a circle: 5-7 seeds, depending on the diameter of the barrel.
I chose Claudia and Crystal hybrids and have been harvesting since mid-June. So if your farm has an old leaky barrel, go for it!

PUMPKIN IN A BARREL
Walking through the market in winter, I accidentally bought a few pumpkin seeds. The owner called the variety Giant, he praised it very much, and in the fall I was convinced that he did not deceive.
In mid-April, I sowed the seeds in cups, a month later I planted them in the ground in old metal barrels without a bottom about 70 cm high and 50 cm in diameter. I filled them with grass, leaves in the fall, compacted it all tightly and poured humus on top to a height of 10-15 cm Watered not often, but plentifully.
At first, the seedlings were covered with glass, and when the frosts passed, they removed them. After flowering, he left two ovaries, and by the end of summer he cut off part of the lashes 4-5 leaves after the last fruit, and every 2-3 internodes in front of the fruits he buried them in the ground and sprinkled them with moist soil. As a result, the roots formed in the immediate vicinity of the fetus, feeding it additionally. Thus, I received two fruits weighing 10,5 kg. They were well stored in the room and the seeds did not germinate inside the fruit. There was almost no cavity inside, and there were only a few seeds.
In appearance, the fruits resemble a pumpkin of the Gray Volga variety, but after 2-2,5 months of storage, the peel turns yellow, the flesh is orange, dense, juicy, tasty.
