Growing a very large family onion in Siberia - the secrets of care
SIBERIAN FAMILY ONION: FOR FOOD AND FOR SEEDS
A lot has been said about the neighborhood of onions with strawberries, the author's experience turned out to be positive. But this is not the main topic of the letter, we will talk about the secrets of a good harvest of different varieties of onions and their storage.
I want to report on the past 2021. It was not easy: from mid-June to mid-August - not a single rain, we had to water with watering cans and set up turntables.
I'll tell you about the bow, I have it mostly family and very large. Some bulbs are up to 10 cm in diameter and weigh 200-250 g. How do I achieve this? Very simple.
Firstly, I cut the entire planting onion for a turnip (except for queen cells) into as many parts as the sprouts allow (photo 1). Then, after a month and a half, I thin out, leaving no more than two rudiments in the nest.
Secondly, for breeding for planting, I plant onions with whole heads. In one nest there are from 5 to 13 pieces. A good onion also grows, both large and smaller. Before planting the bulbs, I warm up my beautiful dacha at a temperature of 40 ° for 8-10 hours. I have been preparing the garden since autumn, adding rotted manure or compost. In the spring I dig with a pitchfork to a depth of 20 cm. I do not use chemicals.
I make rows across the beds at a distance of 25-30 cm, in a row between bulbs 15 cm. Onions prefer fertile soil with neutral acidity. It is good to plant it after cucumbers, cabbage, legumes, you can return to the old places in five years.

Onions remaining from thinning can be transplanted to a new bed (it takes root well) or eaten. In photo 2, onions grown in the manner described above, in photo 3 - grown for seeds with whole heads.
A couple of times during the summer I water with ammonia, from the onion fly I sprinkle with tobacco dust and mustard cake. In the aisles I plant marigolds, saffron, cut and lay out nettles and wormwood. I water only between the grooves from the watering can, moistening the earth at least 15 cm deep. On the second day I loosen. 10-15 days before harvesting, I rake the ground so that the bulbs warm up in the sun.
I clean it when the tops lie down and the necks become softer. I don’t pull, I dig with a pitchfork. I lay it out here on overturned containers. I leave for seven days, I cover for the night and from the rain. Then I cut the roots and tops, dry them under a canopy in a draft and store some underground, some I tie into braids and hang in the kitchen.
If onions are propagated vegetatively from year to year, i.e. by dividing the bush, it gradually degenerates, grows smaller and accumulates diseases. To renew planting material, it is necessary to grow onions from seeds every five years.
For this, large bulbs are selected and planted in the fall (planted in the spring does not shoot well). The testis is grown in the same way as the onion, observing the spatial isolation of the varieties so that cross-pollination does not occur. In autumn, the testicles are cut off along with the arrow and hung up for ripening. Then they thresh, grind and winnow. Clean seeds are stored. That's all science. Nothing complicated.
Separately, I want to say about Luka Belozersky. He is also multi-pronged. I also cut it, but it still grows two or three pieces in a bush. Very large (photo 4). I could not resist, I took a picture (photo 5) of one individual bulb.
Today, 15 bulbs did not enter the garden, there was no more space, I had to plant them in a garden with strawberries. She cared for both onions and strawberries at the same time. They did not interfere with each other, they grew freely. A beautiful onion has grown, five or six in a nest.
I didn’t break through, I decided to see how he would behave in freedom, because he was at ease (photo 6), a month before the cleaning. The same bush (five pieces) after harvesting weighed (photo 7) - 1 kg. I think it's not bad at all.
I am also very pleased with the Belarusian bow. He came to me from Belarus, that's why I call him that (photo 8). On July 3, the daughter and her family came to visit (photo 9). First of all - in the garden, I was delighted with onions, pulled a whole armful to the table.
