The subtleties of wintering Japanese maples - do-it-yourself shelter for him

SHELTER FOR THE JAPANESE MAPLE PALMATUM OWN HANDS
OUT OF MY 16 JAPANESE Maples (Palmatums) last winter, only one was damaged - the largest. I'm almost sure that this year everything will go well.
They overwinter in the open field with warming of all but the simplest K. palmate - Atropurpureum, which withstand frost without any shelter. It happens that the tips of some branches may freeze slightly, but this is not scary. With age, the frost resistance of plants increases.
I use durable materials for the shelter frame.
From above I close it with a padding polyester, “dressed” in lutrasil on both sides, so the fabric does not tear and lasts for several years.
You can take any, I usually buy with a density of 17 g / sq.m. To make “blankets”, I unfold a warm cloth (220-240 cm wide) on the track, close it with lutrasil and cut it into squares of the desired size. I fasten the ends with a stapler.
BENEFITS OF SUCH A JAPANESE MAPLE SHELTER
The synthetic winterizer has really good thermal insulation properties.
This method of shelter does not take much time: I stuck the arcs, put a heater and tied it.
All structural elements are reusable. serve for years.
If necessary, the plants can be easily aerated and quickly opened.
A synthetic winterizer covered with lutrasil does not get wet very much. At the beginning of the experiments, polyethylene was fixed on top, but then abandoned it. Satisfied with the result.
The shelter does not let in much light, so the greenhouse effect does not happen.
ALTERNATIVE TO JAPANESE MAPLE SHELTER
In more northern regions, container growing remains an option. Among palmatums, there are many compact varieties that are perfect for this.
For example, the climate in the garden of Inga Dembitskaya (Far East) is much more difficult for palmatums than in St. Petersburg or Moscow. Winter there can be completely without snow, with strong winds and temperatures over -30 degrees.
Inga now has 19 maples, and the oldest one is 15 years old. She keeps them in a frost-free basement - it is usually dark there, always humid and the temperature ranges from -3 to +1 degrees. Lowers the plants into the basement when a constant temperature is set at night - 5 degrees.
In winter, it checks the soil moisture, watering the plants a little if necessary, but usually there is enough moisture in a 20-liter container until March. In the spring, containers with maples are taken out and dropped in the garden flush with the ground.
