GRAPES IN TOGLIATTI - HOW TO GROW AND FIGHT DISEASES OF NORTHERN GRAPES
It seems that the grape theme is inexhaustible: many letters come to the editorial office, where readers share their experiences. Surely, many were inspired by other people's success stories, so we urge you to pay attention to this article: the author will help you avoid many mistakes.
I want to pick up the topic of grapes, started by Ekaterina Eduardovna Timonina in the article “Bad fashion for continuous pruning”. My husband Nikolai Petrovich and I come from the Nizhny Novgorod region, where grapes have never grown. Now this culture is probably much more widespread than before.
GRAPE LYDIA!
In 1998, friends gave us three cuttings of the Lydia variety. Since we had no experience, we decided to plant them in the fall in the same way as ordinary ones. My husband dug the cuttings into a slope, we sprinkled with humus and wrapped them in sugar bags, outside the city and in wooden boxes.
In winter they covered it with snow and waited. Spring came, and, to our joy, the cuttings released leaves and began to grow. Yes, so smart! My husband had to build trellises.
In the second year, the vines grew even more actively, reaching more than 3 m in length. We made an arch and began to guide them, while we ourselves were looking forward to the autumn harvest. Surely there will be a lot of grapes - after all, there are so many leaves, so many branches Alas, the berries were harvested quite a bit.
Someone suggested to us that the plantings should be thinned out: in the fall, remove the old vines and leave about 2m in length.
But we worked and escaped to the dacha only on weekends - you arrive and you don’t know what to grab on to first of all: either weed carrots, or loosen onions, and also a whole hundred of potatoes, which also should not be forgotten. Land in the garden with tomatoes in cracks, you need to water, tie up.
In general, the grapes grew as they wanted, although we tried not to deprive them of attention.
And one fine year, they finally took off five buckets of the harvest, rejoicing at what fragrant, sweet and fragrant berries!
GRAPE ROOTS FIRST
In 2013, relatives Lena and Oleg from the Belgorod region came to us and brought gifts - their honey and two bunches of cuttings. One is purple grapes, the other is green, both unnamed. Well, don't look a gift horse in the mouth, we'll only know them by sight.
It happened in November, the earth had already frozen, so it was not possible to plant it like last time. We wrapped the cuttings in a newspaper, placed them in a plastic bag and, wrapping them in a jacket, put them on the loggia. I checked them once a month, and in February I put them in the refrigerator. In early March, for the appearance of roots, the back of the knife made cuts on the bark in the lower part, and Nikolai Petrovich prepared plastic bottles and a half, making holes in them with a hot nail.
B put the chibouks in containers and monitored the water level: no higher than 2 cm above the lower bud.
The bottles were placed on the table near the radiator, and the roots were not long in coming. I prepared the planting soil: humus, earth, sand (1:1:1). I poured a little mixture (about 5 cm) into each container, put a cutting, carefully sprinkled the soil and then watered. I put a film on the bottom of the plastic boxes, on which I put bottles with cuttings, about
20 pieces. They began to observe, remembering the words of Lena: "The roots should develop first, this is the main thing." The cuttings came to life, buds, leaves and even flower stalks appeared - however, I carefully plucked them.
May is here and there is no end to the work. We chose a place for seedlings: illuminated, high, without stagnant water. The earth was fertilized with humus, ash, and decks were immediately made from boards, treated with used engine oil.
At the end of May, my husband planted seedlings with a 45° slope to make it easier to lay the vines for the winter.
It turned out three decks 4-5 m long. Later, Nikolai Petrovich dug metal pipes on the sides, I painted them, and he attached three tapestries to them. Care is simple: they watered, loosened and fed the plants with an infusion of weeded grass.
GRAPE AND MILDEW, ANTHRACNOSE, OIDIUM
The vines have been growing all this time with no problems, when suddenly I found brown spots with a dark outline on the new plantings. The leaves began to curl up, dry out, darken. What? Lydia never got sick. I ran to my neighbor Nikolai to get acquainted with the relevant literature, and found several grape diseases: mildew, anthracnose, oidium.
Our case is similar to anthracnose, which needs to be treated with a fungicide or copper oxychloride. Before spraying, the diseased parts of the grapes are cut and burned. I immediately removed all the affected leaves, bought copper oxychloride in the city, which we applied twice. On this, everything ended successfully, but if we had not done this, then in the fall the grapes would have flowed, and the next year the disease would have already penetrated into the wood.
For the prevention of anthracnose, you can use a Bordeaux mixture: we treat the bushes with a 3% solution for the first time before flowering, the second time with 1% after flowering.
So, time passed, the grapes slowly grew, and we gained experience.
"CAN NOT BE!"
I decided to write this article for beginner summer residents: the smart ones learn from the mistakes of others! In addition, your grapes are definitely tastier than store-bought.
In May, when the threat of frost has passed, we remove the linoleum and open the vines. We process with a solution of ferrous sulfate or Bordeaux liquid (both 3%) and leave them open for several days.
Before the buds swell, we take out the vines from the logs and tie them to the trellis: after tying the vines and the awards quickly start to grow.
I do top dressing like this: I dig grooves with a shovel, fill it with humus and ash and water it with water. During the summer, we almost do not moisten the grapes. He has such interesting flowers: at the beginning of flowering, the clusters stick up, and later, by the end of summer, the brush is pouring and already hanging down. D Tip of experienced growers: as soon as the berries become the size of a pea, you need to spray the plant with a solution of colloidal sulfur (3%).
From mid-July, we pluck out weak stepchildren, leaving strong ones. The bush is gaining maximum mass, the vine is ripening, the brushes are pouring. At this time, we feed the ashes. You can use phosphorus-potassium fertilizers, but my husband is against it.
We pinch the tops of the shoots, and thus the height of the vine is 2 m or a little more. Previously, we unknowingly allowed Lydia to grow up to 4 m.
The berries ripen from the second half of August. And we ourselves eat plenty, and treat our neighbors, and they are surprised: it cannot be that such grapes grow in the country! Part of the harvest goes to the preparation of juice, marshmallow, vinegar and soaked berries.
THREE RULES FOR CUTTING GRAPES IN THE MIDDLE STRIP
At the end of October, after the first frost or leaf fall, we cut the bushes. Firstly, we completely get rid of the fruiting vines: they are brown in color, and the bark is a little shaggy on them. Secondly, thin, pencil-like, unripened shoots (green bark) are also cut out. Thirdly, young finger-thick vines that have grown this year remain on the bush, and the stem (head) itself is thick, about 50 cm high.
The upper vines, from two to five pieces, will bear fruit next year, leaving six to eight buds on them.
We also save one lower shoot of the replacement knot and cut it short - into two or three buds.
We put all this in a deck, tie it into bundles and treat it with a solution of iron sulfate (300 g per 10 liters of water) from various fungal diseases. After the bushes dry up, cover with linoleum (insulated pile up) and fix it with pegs to the deck.
From the ends there is little space for ventilation, and in this form the grapes hibernate.
In autumn, friends asked me to leave them a few cuttings. We cut them with four buds, put them in a hole, leaving one on the surface, and sprinkled with humus. In the spring, all the chibouks began, gave roots and leaves.
I wish the summer residents health and excellent harvests!

NOTE: GRAPE SAVE
I want to tell you about Laura grapes. Unfortunately, for two years in a row he was sick: the clusters cracked and turned black at once, but I was able to cure him. In early spring, I sprayed the vine with a solution: 1 tbsp. l. copper and iron sulfate in a bucket of water. In June, I applied a solution of colloidal sulfur (300 g per bucket of water). A week later - a solution of kefir (400 g per 5.l of water). In early August, she sprayed with manganese from gray rot (5-7 g per bucket of water). Before sheltering for the winter, I treated the vine with a solution of iron sulfate (300 g per 5 liters of water).
