BEANS - PLANTING AND CARE, MY ADVICE FOR THEIR GROWING IN THE MOSCOW REGION
Vegetable beans - plants for the lazy: from the series "planted - and forgot." They are easy to grow and the health benefits are exceptional. In addition, they can be used in the ritual dishes of the New Year's table.
For many peoples of the ancient world, beans were one of the main food and fodder crops.
The Bible mentions that they were already grown in Palestine during the reign of King Solomon, a thousand years before our era.
Today, beans occupy significant areas in Spain, Italy, France and the UK. For sale fresh on the market, they are grown by farmers, and for processing, mainly frozen, by large agricultural enterprises.
In Western European countries, the custom of putting a bean seed in a Christmas cake has been preserved. The lucky man who got a piece with a bean became the "bean king", had the right to choose a queen for himself and dispose of the holiday, even if he was the youngest in the family.
Beans are an excellent precursor for any vegetables and flowers, and also a green manure. They heal the soil and enrich it with nitrogen.
SIT ON BOB
I decided to breed beans for three reasons.
Firstly, this is a diet for me, the necessary proteins for young children, and just a useful product for all family members - for example, blood sugar leads to normal. The high calorie content of beans allows you to quickly fill up with dishes from them and maintain a feeling of satiety for a long time. And according to the unanimous opinion of nutritionists, beans are a wonderful, low-calorie, protein-rich food. They have 5% protein of raw weight - more than green peas and beans per shoulder.
Boiled in a small amount of salted water, unripe bean seeds straight from the garden are fantastically tasty with any sauces or simply with vegetable oil, dill and parsley. They can also be stewed, added to soups and stews. Raw beans also go with a bang, all household members, especially children, constantly graze not only on sugar peas, but also on beans. However, it is important not to miss the moment here, only tender young seeds are tasty. I freeze a few beans, but basically the whole crop is left fresh.
The second reason is aesthetic - the coulisses of tall beans along the edges of the beds decorate the garden, structure the space and protect the ground cucumbers and tomatoes from the wind.
And finally, there is an opinion that planting beans scares away moles, which are pretty annoying to me, as well as the Colorado potato beetle. I must say right away that my moles turned out to be completely immune to the presence of beans, molehills appear right next to the plants, but the Colorado potato beetle has disappeared somewhere in the last 2-3 years.

BEANS MODERATE IN CARE IN EVERY SENSE
Beans are virtually maintenance-free. They need to be sown, weeded at the beginning of growth (then powerful plants drown out the weeds themselves), spud a couple of times and harvest. Feeding and watering, as a rule, are not required, the plants are content with what falls from their neighbors in the beds. Moreover, the beans
powerful tap roots penetrating almost 1,5 m into the ground, and nodule bacteria live on them, assimilating atmospheric nitrogen for the plant. Their colonies, by the way, are visible to the naked eye (see photo).
The best conditions for growth are a temperate climate and sufficient moisture. If it is hot and dry, plant productivity is reduced. And they are very photophilous and do not grow well in the shade. Beans do not like acidic soil, the problem must be eliminated in the fall by liming or adding a large amount of ash (1 kg / sq. M).

BEANS GROWING - LESSONS LEARNED
I sow beans in two terms - in late April and mid-May. I tried to sow earlier, when the soil was ready, but I encountered rotting seedlings. Seeds before sowing should be soaked for 2 hours in warm water (25 °). I close them by about 8 cm and compact the earth in rows.
Shoots usually appear in 10-14 days. The first step is to deal with weeds. Plants bloom about a month after germination, at this time I spud them to give resistance to lodging, I do not tie them to pegs. In the phase of mass flowering, I pinch the tops of the shoots in order to direct the energy of the plants to the formation of fruits.
About a month and a half after the start of flowering, depending on the weather, you can already collect beans in technical ripeness. First, I remove them from the lower part of the plants, carefully breaking them out or cutting them off with scissors (it is important not to damage the stem), then I rise higher. Fees every 5-10 days. Small beans should not be picked too early, the seeds in them can be bitter and have not yet reached a specific taste. I use seeds on the day of collection - live food for lunch or dinner.
The most unpleasant pest is the black bean aphid, I fight it with a soapy solution with the addition of ammonia, since the main product - the seeds - are reliably protected by the wings of the bean fruit.
At the end of summer, I cut the plants at ground level and send them to the compost heap, and sometimes I put them in the aisles of late vegetables - leeks and celery, which at this time are already difficult to bother, and leave the roots, since nodule plants still work on them. bacteria, enriching the soil with nitrogen.
RUSSIAN, BELARUSIAN, WINDSOR BEANS
It so happened that I started growing beans with a variety test. There are bags for sale, in which there are only 5-10 seeds, and I needed 50-60. So I bought 5 different varieties, as it turned out, classic ones - Russian black, Belarusian, Virov, Velena, Windsor green.
To my inexperienced eye, the plants of different varieties did not differ much and the seeds all tasted good. Then I tried new varieties - Optics, Children's Delight, Yankel Byaly.
As a result, I settled on the Velena variety - all the plants were uniform in appearance and in height. This is a medium variety. Plants are about 90 cm high. Sugar beans (without a parchment layer), in technical (milky) ripeness are fleshy, bright green, 10-12 cm long and 1,5-2 cm wide. There are 3-4 seeds in a bean, weighing about 1,5, XNUMX g. They are rounded-angular, greenish-yellowish both in milk and in full ripeness. Now I myself grow the seeds of this variety - I collect fruits from several of the best plants.
At the end of summer, I pull the bushes out of the ground with roots and hang them upside down in the barn for ripening. I thresh dry beans and dry them in the room, scattering them in one layer. I also liked Windsor greens, but they are late ripening.
