Your eggplant seeds - how to collect and prepare.

COLLECTING SEEDS FROM YOUR EGGLANTS
Own seed production gives greater confidence in obtaining a high and high-quality crop. Consider how to collect seed from plants. At the same time, it should be remembered that this work should not be carried out on hybrids - full-fledged plants cannot be obtained from their seeds.
Council
To obtain seeds from this heat-loving vegetable, it is necessary to achieve biological ripeness by the fruits. And this in non-traditional eggplant growing areas can be achieved only by seedlings, and sowing should be done in late February - early March.
Selecting fruit for seed collection
To obtain seeds, you must choose the most healthy and developed bush. Only 1-2 fruits should be left on it, the rest of the flowers, ovaries and small pods that appear on this plant must be ruthlessly removed. This is done so that the bush gives all the strength and nutrients to the development of the testes.
testis condition
How long do you need to keep the fruits intended for collecting seeds on the bush? Readiness will be indicated by the color of the peel, which should turn dark purple or dark brown with a dirty tint. But it is impossible to start up such an eggplant immediately for seeds. Until the seeds are fully ripened, the fruit should be put on ripening.
If its ripeness is as indicated above, one week is enough to achieve the desired condition. And in the case when it was not possible to bring the eggplant to the desired maturity due to weather conditions, the ripening process can increase up to 1,5 months. The signal to stop this process will be the acquisition of a dark, saturated, dirty color by the fruit.
Extracting seeds from eggplant
Eggplant seeds are extracted in warm water, which is poured into a bowl. The calyx with the upper part and the lower part of the fruit, where there are no seeds, are cut off from the fruit. The eggplant itself is cut lengthwise into several parts, alternately placed in water and the seeds are carefully separated with your fingers. You can also grind the eggplant pulp on a coarse grater.
Weak seeds float in water, they are carefully drained together with pieces of pulp. High-quality seeds remain at the bottom, which are separated on a sieve and laid out in a thin layer on cloth, burlap or paper. Drying takes place in a ventilated area for several days. From time to time the seeds need to be turned. Fluidity indicates the end of the process.
Note
About 10 g of seeds are obtained from 200 kg of seed fruits. Fully matured quality eggplant seeds are brown in color. If the seeds are light yellow, they will not germinate, do not even waste time and effort on them.
Storing Eggplant Seeds
Eggplant seeds can last up to 5 years if placed in paper bags and kept at room temperature. Do not allow direct sunlight and high humidity in the room. The sowing qualities of seeds can be improved if during storage they are heated 2-3 times for 2-4 hours at a temperature of 50 degrees.
Note
Although eggplants are capable of self-pollination, since they have bisexual flowers, they can be pollinated by plants of their own species. If this happens with bushes belonging to different varieties, the resulting seeds can present unpleasant surprises in the future. And the warmer the climate, the greater the likelihood of such cross-pollination. Therefore, when growing eggplant for seeds in the southern regions, a spatial isolation of 300-500 m is required, and in the middle lane -100 m.
