SPARKSIS AND IKSIA - NEW IN THE FLOWER
I bought corms of ixia and sparaxis in the fall. While I store them in suitable conditions, like other bulbs. Tell us when to plant them and how to care for them during the season. Galina Pavlovna
SPARAXIS
- A few days before planting, sparaxis corms are taken out of storage and heated at room temperature. In May, when the threat of return frosts has passed, they can already be planted in a flower bed. Choose a bright, sunny and wind-protected place with nutritious soil.
They dig a hole, lay drainage and plant planting material to a depth of 6-7 cm at a distance of 10-12 cm. Until strong green sprouts appear when the substrate dries, the plantings are regularly watered. If the plants during the season were not damaged by diseases and pests, then in August you can see flowering, which will continue until frost.
Faded flowers are removed in time so that the corms have time to ripen well by the dormant period.
After flowering, when the aerial part turns yellow and dries, the corms are dug up, cleaned from the ground, and dried. Then put in paper bags with dry peat, vermiculite or river sand and store at a temperature of + 8-10 degrees. Planting material is periodically inspected for the presence of diseases and, if necessary, damaged or rotten bulbs are rejected.

IKSIYA
Ixia does not tolerate even slight frosts, therefore, in the middle lane, it is planted in open ground in the spring, in mid-May, when the threat of return frosts disappears. The average air temperature should be about +20 degrees, and the soil - at least +10 degrees. The flower loves open sunny places and drained fertile soil, which is desirable to prefill with humus (10 l / sq.m) and superphosphate (50-70 g / sq.m). The distance between the bulbs during planting is within 20-25 cm.
When container growing Ixia, it is better to choose large containers, because the flower likes to grow freely. Corms when planting should be 2 cm covered with soil on top.
In August, the ixia bushes dry and turn yellow. In order not to “lose” or damage the plants during digging, it is advisable not to wait for the complete disappearance of the aerial part. It is better to cut the foliage in advance, carefully dig up the corms and put them in a ventilated semi-shady place to dry.
Damaged or rotten bulbs are removed. The rest are washed with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, dried again, put in a paper bag filled with river sand, and stored until spring in the refrigerator on the bottom shelf. Periodically check to detect and remove rotten parts in time.
