VARIETIES OF GOSEBERRY AND REVIEWS ABOUT THEM - READERS HELP TO CHOOSE THE MOST DELICIOUS VARIETIES
Letters come to us, where readers-gardeners share their experience in growing different crops.
And of course, they have varieties that have become favorites. We bring to your attention such varieties of gooseberries. If you haven't tried them on your own yet, you might want to do so now.
VARIETY OF GOOSEBERRY KRASNOSLAVIANSKIY
I've been growing this variety for 15 years and I'm not overjoyed. During this time, I cut off the old bushes (the variety is cut perfectly), rooted and planted in new places. And uprooted the old ones.
I have 5 bushes of different ages. They are planted next to bushes of other varieties (Malachite, Masheka, Belarusian sugar) for better pollination. Although I read that even without cross-pollination, Krasnoslavyansky gooseberries give high yields.
Why 5 bushes? Is not it too much? I answer: no! This is my favorite variety. The berries are very sweet (Krasnoslavyansky is generally considered one of the sweetest varieties of gooseberries), with thin delicate skin, with very slight acidity, with fragrant refreshing pulp and, moreover, beautiful - maroon and dark cherry. The bushes are frost-resistant, do not get sick with anything, even powdery mildew does not take them. The harvest is high. The berries ripen by July 20, and can be on the bushes for a long time without crumbling, so it is very convenient to harvest.
Delicious berries are liked not only by us, but also by birds - for example, fieldfares. I cover the bushes from them with a net.
So that the bushes do not fall apart, I cut them to the inner bud, thus directing new shoots up, and not to the sides. I remove thin weak shoots. I shorten too long, as a result, my bush is not higher than 1 m. So it winters better, and bullfinches do not damage the buds on protruding shoots. I tie for the winter so that the snow does not break the branches.
I prune the bushes in early spring, as soon as the snow melts. In addition, I remove all the buds from the bottom of the shoots to a height of up to 25 cm from the soil surface. So it is more convenient to harvest the crop, and the berries will not get dirty during periods of rain.
I mulch the near-trunk circles with a layer of peat or humus - in early spring it prevents insect pests that hibernated in the soil from reaching the surface. And then it keeps moisture in the ground, it doesn’t have to be loosened, it saves my time, and it’s better for gooseberry bushes - after all, their root system is superficial, and it’s not worth disturbing the trunk circle once again.
In autumn, I water the soil under the bushes with a bioinsecticide based on metarizin. It destroys many pests that have climbed into the soil for the winter.
We eat fresh berries and make preparations. I note that there are a lot of gelling substances in Krasnoslavyansky berries, so you can simply squeeze the juice and add sugar (2-3 tablespoons per 1 liter of juice), put it in the refrigerator, and soon you will get a beautiful and tasty jelly, also rich in vitamins and beneficial substances. It can be frozen for the winter. And you can dry it in the oven or dryer and thus prepare marshmallow.

GOSEBERRY VARIET BLACK NEGUS
The variety celebrates its centenary - it was created by I. V. Michurin in the 1920s. Negus means "king" in Abyssinian. Remember, in the poems of N. Gumilyov: “The wise elephant of Abyssinia, Negus Negesti, transferred his throne to the stony Shoa”? Negus Negesti - "King of Kings".
Black negus is really like a king among gooseberries. You can't confuse him with anything. And it is not for nothing that he has been "reigning" for 100 years and gardeners continue to love him. Berries cannot be called large (average weight 2-2 g), but what a taste! Sweet with sourness and reminiscent of grapes! varieties Isabella. We eat such "grapes" fresh, freeze for the winter, cook compotes with other berries, add to pastries (pies, charlotte), and of course, we make wine. And the jam turns out to be so interesting in taste that no one has yet been able to guess what it is cooked from.
But the amazing taste is not the only advantage of the variety. The Black Negus has a very high yield (the shoots are literally strewn with berries). The bush is highly frost-resistant, resistant to diseases (including powdery mildew). Berries can be stored and transported, they are not only very tasty, but also rich in vitamins and various useful substances, which is why they are even used for medicinal purposes.
The bush, if not trimmed, can grow up to 2 m. Shoots with a huge number of thorns - this, of course, makes harvesting difficult. I thought about cutting them. So now I shoot berries comfortably.
The variety can be easily propagated by layering. And to form a bush - both with an ordinary bush and on a stem. I tried. Beautiful and practical.
I prune annually in the spring, thin out, remove the shoots and cut out the thorns at the same time. I don’t treat pests and diseases, because Negus is not affected by them. And I carry out top dressing as usual: in spring and summer with complex fertilizers, in autumn - with special fertilizer labeled "Autumn". And once again, in a couple of years, I put rotted manure in the trunk circle. I believe that such organic top dressing is very necessary for plants and helps to increase the yield and quality of berries.
From the berries of the Black Negus, as I already said, such amazing wine and liquor are obtained that cannot be compared with grapes. Those who have tried will understand me. And for those of you who haven't yet, I definitely recommend it. For example, according to my recipe.
Gooseberry wine. For 1 kg of berries - 5 kg of sugar, 1 liters of water. I don’t wash my water (they have wild yeast), I knead it with a pusher, transfer it to a bottle and pour it with syrup made from water and sugar. I cover the neck with gauze and leave it for 1 days at room temperature, stirring every day. Soon there will be foam. So the fermentation has begun. I drain the liquid through a tube, squeeze the pulp and pour the juice from it into the previously drained liquid. I pour it into a clean bottle, install a water seal and put it in a dark place at a temperature of 5-4 °. The water seal will stop bubbling after 15-25 days, indicating the end of fermentation. I drain the wine from the sediment and taste it. You can add sugar to taste or vodka for strength.

GOOSEBERRY LANDOR
Thornless, with sweet berries of a beautiful prune color, with small and soft seeds that do not get stuck in the teeth. In a word, this variety is my love! I have four children and they love picking Commander Berries from the bush, and I don't worry about them hurting themselves on the thorns. Also, the bush is fruitful, beautiful, not affected by powdery mildew and pests.
The berries are large, with thin skin. In different years, they are slightly different in taste - either more sweets, or tart or sweet with sourness. But still the taste is pleasant.
And another big plus is that this variety is very winter-hardy, zoned in the Ural and West Siberian regions, so it winters well with us, and I am calm for its safety.

BELARUSIAN SUGAR GOSEBERRY VARIETY
In Belarus, a huge number of amazing varieties of fruit and berry crops are bred. I keep abreast of new products and try to buy the ones I like. Belarusian sugar gooseberry is a real gift from Belarusian breeders. Large and beautiful light green berries with excellent dessert taste and thin skin.
"Sugar" variety was called for a reason. Berries are really sweet. The bush is low (up to 1 m), dense, so it looks good and does not fall apart, the berries do not get dirty. Withstands any adverse conditions, frost-resistant, productive, self-fertile (but pollinators are needed to get a larger crop and the largest berries). Resistant to powdery mildew, anthracnose. Of the minuses - an abundance of spikes. But even despite this, Belarusian sugar is my favorite. It was after tasting its berries that I began to look for other sweet-fruited varieties.
Here is my list of the sweetest varieties: Lyubimets and White Nights (early), Fantasia, Voluznev's Memory, Elegant (mid-ripening), Gentle, Ural pink, Beryl (late-ripening).
And by the way, I have already planted the improved Belarusian sugar variety. I expect that its berries will be even larger and sweeter than those of its predecessor without the epithet "improved". We will see!

VARIETIES OF GOSEBERRY HARLEQUIN
I want to share my impressions about this variety, because the main thing that struck me about it was its incredible yield! This is not on any other gooseberry planted with me. The whole family goes out to pick berries with buckets and baskets.
There are other advantages - the bush is resistant to many diseases, including powdery mildew, tolerates winters (both temperature changes and severe frosts), there are almost no thorns on the shoots, so harvesting a giant crop is a real pleasure. Moreover, the berries can be stored and well transported, and you can sell them if you wish.
As for the taste of berries, I can say that it is not the best that I have met. The usual sweet and sour gooseberry flavor. Even in the description of the variety there is a note “for processing” and a tasting score of 4 points.
I read such an opinion that the most delicious berries are in the most prickly varieties. And vice versa, there are no thorns - there is no excellent taste of berries. It seems that this version is confirmed.
Still, I love this gooseberry. I make billets out of it, freeze it, bake pies, add it to sauces.

A gooseberry bush grows, quite large, but the yield is small. What could be the reason?

Gooseberries love fertile soil, so you should add half a bucket of humus or compost to the planting pit. An adult bush needs to be properly fed. In the spring - nitrogen fertilizers (urea or ammophos) or mullein. You can scatter dry chicken manure under the bush, after which the soil under it is mulched with compost, sawdust, peat.
In the middle of summer, superphosphate is applied simultaneously with good watering. In late July - early August, potash fertilizers are fertilized (potassium sulfate in liquid form - 3 tablespoons per 1 bucket of water), 1 bucket per bush. In autumn, after the foliage has fallen, the soil under the bushes is covered with a layer of humus 5-6 cm.
