POTATOES AFTER RYE - RESULTS
It is known that potatoes need about 90 days to ripen. I planted it late last year - June 15th. The first shoots appeared by the end of June.
Previously, in the fall, in place of potatoes, I sowed winter rye, and by the time the potatoes were planted, this rye had grown very large. I had to rip it straight out. But this way too much fertile land was harvested. Then I began to put back a bunch of rye into each hole dug for potatoes, twisting the greens, making a kind of rye “pillow” for potatoes. I added azophoska and chicken manure.
Since it rained a lot in the Urals in May and June and it was cold, these hummocks apparently began to rot, and my potatoes caught up with the neighbor's, planted on time.
Further, the summer presented us with a gift in the form of hot and dry July and August, there was practically no rain. As a result, for gardeners who did not water the potatoes, they grew very small, as never before, even the planting rows did not close. And I grew up good, as usual.
I watered the potatoes with cold water at a temperature of 5 ° C from a well, and it was 30 ° C outside, so in some places the tops began to turn yellow, maybe phytophthora went. Because of this, I had to clean it on September 1st. It turns out that my, in general, good potatoes ripened in 60 days.
Interestingly, my daughter planted her potatoes of the same variety in the same gardens, as usual, at the end of May. Planting material of the Ermak variety, red, I germinated it to small good sprouts.
But the daughter of this potato did not have enough, and she annoyed the usual white one, which was in the refrigerator, bought in the store, without sprouts. Daughter practically does not water potato plantings.
By September, she had grown very small potatoes, as did everyone who did not water. Her daughter did not dig, as September was also dry and warm. Despite the fact that the tops of the daughter's potatoes were almost absent (dried up), by mid-October she had a quite good harvest (see photo), however, in 120 days.
It is worth saying that our gardens are the coldest in the city, located in the north-east of the mountain pass, and we always harvest the latest. But even in such conditions, we do not despair and come up with various tricks to collect good harvests!
