WE UNDERSTAND THE VARIETIES OF STRAWBERRY
Large-fruited strawberries (popularly - strawberries) - one of the most desirable berries. It favorably differs from others in productivity, precocity, high plasticity and the ability for rapid vegetative propagation. An important condition for obtaining its annual yields is the correct choice of varieties, which is not at all easy to do with today's variety of assortment.
STRAWBERRY IS SUCH CHARACTER…
Depending on the nature of fruiting, all cultivated varieties of garden strawberries are divided into traditional - single fruiting and new - remontant, capable of yielding a crop several times per season. Both one and the other react differently to the length of daylight hours. On this basis, three types of varieties are distinguished:
1. Strawberry varieties of short daylight hours (KSD), for the most part, these are traditional, forming flower buds once a season with a short day of 10-12 hours and low (not higher than 1217 ° C) temperatures;
2. Varieties of long-day strawberries (DSD), these include remontants, laying flower buds with a day length of 15-17 hours and a temperature not lower than 17 ° C. They have two fruiting peaks: the first - in early summer, at the same time or a little earlier than ordinary varieties, the second - from August to autumn frosts. They are distinguished by weak mustache formation and the fact that their mustache rosettes do not bloom;
3. Neutral day strawberry varieties (NSD), they are a special type of remontants capable of forming flower buds regardless of the length of the day. They can give the harvest, though the whole year, if conditions allow. Rosettes on the mustache blooming.
Why should amateur gardeners know about this? The thing is that each of these groups of varieties has its own cultivation techniques. If remontant varieties are cared for in the same way as traditional ones, then there is a high probability of being left without a crop.
STRAWBERRY VARIETIES FOR A STABLE HARVEST
Most of the traditional varieties of garden strawberries, they bear fruit only 3-4 weeks. After that, the bushes increase the vegetative mass in order to form the next year's crop in the autumn period. They give it away together, and subject to agricultural technology, these varieties bear fruit abundantly in one place for up to 4 years, after which the planting must be renewed. The aging of the root system leads to a drop in yield. According to the ripening period, they are divided into early, medium ripening and late.
Early varieties in the spring are the first to start growing and begin to bloom before anyone else. They also have the shortest period from the beginning of flowering to fruiting. The only thing to consider: the flowers can fall under frost. Among the popular varieties, you should pay attention to Honey (has a stable yield, is resistant to diseases. The berries are moderately large and sweet, do not shrink), Amy, or Ami (a new variety with rich red, large, oval-conical berries with a spout. Fruits up to a month, sets berries in any weather), and Brill (a new variety, berries are large, orange-red, cone-shaped with a spout. The taste is harmonious, there are more sweets than sours).
Varieties of medium maturity are the most productive. Most of them are winter-hardy, are less damaged by frosts and are less sensitive to temperature drops after thaws. Of those that have been grown for a long time, it is worth paying attention to Mashenka and Bogota. Masha's berries are tasty, juicy, rich red-burgundy color. The former, like those of Bogota, have a comb-like shape. The next ones are conical. Bogotá's berries are light red, tasty, juicy, ripen two weeks later than Masha's, which significantly extends the period of fresh consumption. Berries of Bogota can reach a diameter of 10-12 cm. Bogota loses to other varieties of low winter hardiness.
Of the new varieties, you should pay attention to Asia (the berries are bright red, conical, rich in taste. Quite large, and most importantly, they practically do not shrink with age. Fruiting is extended up to a month) and Syria (ripe berries are almost cherry, conical, are among the called "dry": they do not crumple when harvested, the best flavor palette is gained when fully ripened). Both varieties are Italian, in terms of taste they are inferior, for example, to the Russian variety Tsaritsa, but they win in yield.
Late varieties are the most winter-hardy and most resistant to prolonged rainy weather, with firm berries that are well suited for processing and freezing. Among the popular ones is the Malvina variety. Her berries are juicy, dark cherry. The variety is multi-tracked, winter-hardy, resistant to diseases. Fruiting is extended for a month.
It is worth paying attention to the novelty of 2021 Moskovia (Moscow). An industrial grade, has large dark-cherry berries of a conic form. Resistant to major diseases of the leaf apparatus, winter-hardy.

STRAWBERRY VARIETIES FOR BERRY CONVEYOR
In recent years, remontant varieties have attracted more and more attention from gardeners. But, having decided to have such ones on your site, it should be borne in mind that they were bred for intensive industrial production. Initially, yielding 2-4 crops per season (DSD) were obtained, and then more advanced ones, intended for year-round cultivation in greenhouses (NSD).
Despite the fact that the varieties of each type of remontant strawberries have their own special agricultural techniques, when cultivated in the open field, neutral-day strawberries behave in almost the same way as long ones: they give no more than two crops per year. But the most important thing is that in the conditions of our climate in the open field, even two full-fledged crops cannot be obtained. You can only extend the collection of fresh berries, for which you should either grow these varieties in spring and autumn under cover, or regularly remove all flower stalks from the plantation that appear on the bushes in spring until June.
Then the summer harvest will begin to ripen much earlier (after the ordinary strawberries have departed) and in large quantities. And it will be possible to collect it before frost.
High yields and repeated flowering of remontant strawberries greatly deplete the bushes, so their lifespan is much shorter than that of traditional strawberries. If remontant varieties DSD can still be kept in one place for two years, then NSD is only one. You can, of course, try more, but the berries will not be as large, there are not so many of them.
The nuances of agricultural strawberries:
1. when planting bushes in spring (especially frigo), it is necessary to remove peduncles and mustaches before the end of June;
2. removal of flower stalks from overwintered plantings in spring allows not only to significantly increase the second crop, but also to get it a month and a half earlier;
3. in the case of planning to expand the plantation by rooting mustaches in the first year of fruiting, the second crop should be sacrificed;
4. the most favorable planting dates are the end of July - the beginning of August, as soon as young seedlings grow;
5. For the formation of new rosettes and constant fruiting, the bushes need increased rates of potassium, nitrogen, and microelements. Leaves should remain green until late autumn;
6. To get a large harvest of large berries, you need to pluck your mustache regularly. The more whiskers, the smaller the berry;
7. after autumn frosts, it is necessary to cut off all flower stalks along with frozen berries to prevent the development of rot.
Of the remontant varieties of DSD, the most delicious and large-fruited are Elizaveta-2 (stable and productive), Selva, Moscow delicacy, Evi-2.
The most popular NSD varieties are Albion, Monterey, Capri, Charlotte (sweet, fruitful).
