GROWING CLEMATIS FOR VERTICAL GARDENING
When we got a house in the village, we decided to deal not only with fruit trees and a vegetable garden, but also decorate the site with beautiful flowers and shrubs. We looked at a lot of literature on floriculture and learned that there are ornamental plants with very unusual and beautiful flowers - clematis, which can be used for vertical gardening.
Perennial decorative vines - clematis, or as they are also called - clematis, are represented by numerous species, varieties and hybrid forms. Clematis can be shrubs, but we are looking at vertical gardening and talk about vines.
Clematis are ornamental perennials from the buttercup family. The genus unites about 200 species and 2000 varieties and varieties growing in the temperate and tropical zones of Asia, North and South America, and Africa.
In Europe, clematis first appeared in England in the 1860th century. In the future, horticultural firms in France and Germany took up the cultivation of clematis. In XNUMX, some varieties appeared in St. Petersburg and Riga.
Currently, breeders have bred hybrid forms that are characterized by high winter hardiness. They can be grown in central Russia (photo 1).
LANDING CLEMATIS
Clematis should be planted in a sunny place in nutritious alkaline soil. Sites with acidic peaty soil are not suitable.
Landing pits are prepared with a diameter of 50-60 cm and a depth of 50 cm; at the bottom they arrange drainage from large gravel - 10-15 cm, add 5 kg of humus and 2 handfuls of wood ash.
In the conditions of the middle zone, clematis is best planted in May, when the soil warms up a little, and in the southern regions in September-October.
When planting a seedling, the root neck is deepened by 8-12 cm so that the buds or a small shoot are at the level of the soil. Too deep planting inhibits plant growth. Do not try to quickly dig up and throw away the plant: if in spring clematis does not immediately wake up, it may be late with awakening, but then it will catch up and will delight you with its beautiful flowers!
WATERING.
Clematis - moisture-loving plants, require abundant watering, especially in dry weather. The soil should be saturated by 40-50 cm. After 1-2 days, the soil should be loosened.
It is better to have plants near the southern wall of the house, or on trellises. Most varieties of clematis have tendrils and are well attached to the support. The support can be any: slats, mesh, stretched cords or wire. Moreover, the wire helps to pull the vine where you need it (photo 2).
But there are varieties that do not have a mustache, and they must be tied to supports (photo 5).
Two or three times per season, the plants need to be fed with organic fertilizers: a solution of mullein (1:10) or chicken manure (1:15).
Depending on the variety, clematis bloom from late May to late September, which means you can pick up such plants to admire their beautiful flowers all summer long.
For central Russia, it is better to choose clematis varieties that form flowers on the shoots of the current year: such plants tolerate winter more easily. Before frost, they must be cut off, leaving 15-20 cm, and covered with non-woven material, or covered with charcoal.

Reproduction.
Plants can be propagated by dividing the bush and cuttings.
Mature bushes have many shoots and can be divided into parts. The bush is dug up and a part of the rooted shoots is carefully separated with secateurs.
Cuttings are best harvested during the budding of the plant. From the shoot, you should take the middle part with well-developed buds. The stalk should consist of one node. Above the node should be left 1-5 cm with leaf halves, and below the node - 2-1 cm internodes (photo 2).
The cuttings are planted in a wet mixture of sand, black soil and weathered slightly acidic peat in equal parts. The cutting node is deepened by 2-3 cm and watered, after one and a half to two months the cuttings take root.
Following these rules, you can decorate your site very beautifully, decorate the unsightly walls of buildings, outbuildings, fences, or arrange magnificent resting places under pergolas entwined with flowering clematis (photo 3, 4).
GROWING AND CARE OF CLEMATIS - ADVICE AND FEEDBACK
CLEMATIS: LANDING AND REPRODUCTION
There are 4 main ways to propagate clematis: seeds, dividing the bush, layering and green cuttings. Dividing a bush is the fastest, but time-consuming method. Growing from seeds is lengthy and not as reliable. Therefore, I was convinced that it is best to plant and propagate clematis by layering and cuttings in September.
I always keep seedlings bought on the market or my delenki from old, overgrown bushes before planting in September in a solution of copper sulphate (a pinch per 1 liter of warm water). I immerse the clematis roots in the composition for 10 minutes, and then gently dry them with a paper towel. I prepare a place for plants like this: in equal parts I mix humus, peat, soddy soil and sand, add 1 g of complex mineral fertilizer per 150 sq.m. The size of the planting pits is 50 × 50 cm, the distance between clematis is at least 9 m. I straighten the roots of the seedling and deepen the root neck by 11-XNUMX cm. The young plant quickly adapts to a new place and will have time to take root by winter.
And propagating clematis is easiest by layering. Under an adult bush, I make a groove about 8 cm deep, put a shoot in it, press it in several places with staples and fill it with a mixture of humus and garden soil (1: 2), leaving the end of the layer (10 cm) on the soil surface. I water generously until the first frost. For the winter I cover with fir paws. In the spring, when young shoots appear, I mulch clematis with peat. In autumn, the grown seedling is carefully separated from the mother plant and transplanted to a permanent place.
FACT: after planting, THE FIRST 2-3 YEARS AT CLEMATIS ARE UNPRESENTABLE APPEARANCE. DECORATIVE PLANTS WILL BE CLOSER TO FOUR YEARS.

A couple of years ago I learned about an unusual way to get new clematis. In the first month of autumn, after pruning, you need to select several long, well-ripened shoots, bend them into rings, bury a shovel in the soil on a bayonet and cover with a spunbond for the winter. Last year I decided to experiment with the "ringlet" - and now I can't get enough of the new strong clematis!
