ONION IN THE YAROSLAV REGION - VARIETIES, LANDING AND CARE
I remember very well the times when neither I nor my friends thought much about onion varieties.
The sevok on the market was of two "grades" - yellow and red. And we knew: yellow - with golden scales - "evil", but it is stored well; red is sweeter and juicier, but does not lie for a long time, therefore there is no point in planting a lot
Now in stores there are seeds of various varieties of onions, sets are also easy to buy. During the season, the famous Stuttgarter Riesen is on sale, you can buy Red Baron, Sturon, Strigunovsky, Bessonovsky, Danilovsky and Odintsovsky.
The choice of varieties is partly dictated by circumstances. A popular bow is either really good (like the same Stuttgarter, which works in almost any conditions, or Red Baron), or simply available. For example, of all the modern non-shooting varieties we have on sale, I find Sturon - I plant it. In recent years, in the fall, it is easier to buy it than to find the smallest (wild oats) Stuttgarter.
With onions, which are grown in an annual crop - from seeds, through seedlings - the story, in my opinion, is different. Here the choice is definitely not dictated by the availability on sale: until now it was easy to buy any varieties, it's not a set that you need to see in order to assess the quality - seeds can be ordered via the Internet. But for some reason, there are only a few varieties that are well known. What is this. if not a fashion trend?
SIZE MATTERS?
For example, the widely advertised Exhibition. This is not the only variety with a large bulb - but for some reason, very little is written and said about others (the same Globo). And they often forget that a giant onion cannot be grown without additional effort.
This is a matter of taste, no doubt, but I am not interested in extremely large onions. Spending time and effort on growing seedlings and painstaking care to get a bulb weighing half a kilo, or even more? And what to do with it then?
Sturon from sevka without much hassle grows up to 200-250 g - I use such bulbs for drying or harvesting. I simply don’t need an even larger bow, especially if it requires additional effort. For everyday use, I plant a Stuttgarter Riesen - this is my size.
I talked with friends who grew Exhibition, and came to the conclusion that this is a bow for enthusiasts and lovers of records. They nurse the seedlings, the blade seedlings swoop down in cups.
WHY GROW ONIONS FROM SEEDS?
From seeds, I grew Yalta onions - a juicy and large southern variety. I will plant again this year. For what? Just want. I think this is the main reason why gardeners grow onions from seeds.
There is no other way to grow Yalta, but I like it. Just like my friends like Exhibition. But at least I don’t kill myself with seedlings, and I sow quite a bit: Yalta is a salad variety and is stored poorly, a lot of it is not needed.
I think that at least once you need to grow onions from seeds - at least to understand whether it is interesting to you personally or not. And choose varieties according to your needs. Be proud of large vegetables and are ready to make an effort for them - one story. You are in the country only on weekends and you don’t want to hang around in the garden instead of rest - it’s different. Grow onions for a big harvest - the third. Follow the fashion for varieties - the fourth.
Everyone is right in their own way. The main thing is that the gardener himself likes the result.
SO THE BOW DOES NOT GO INTO THE ARROW
It is important to store the sevoc either at a temperature of O-GS, or above 15 ° C. If stored from 1 to 15 ° C, then the bulbs undergo vernalization and go into the arrow during the growing season. Shooting can also occur due to very early or late winter planting or cool summers.
RULES FOR PLANTING ONIONS IN SPRING
In spring, the sowing is planted in the soil, which has warmed up to 10-12 ° C.
Onion turnip loves fertile, organic soil.
Before planting seedlings for disinfection, they are heated for 8 hours over a heating battery. It also prevents shooting.
Germination speeds up the soaking of the seed for 12-24 hours in warm water.
Planted to a depth of 3-4 cm, with a deeper planting, a small bulb is formed.
Onion sets are planted on ridges in loose grooves, the distance between the ridges is from 15 to 40 cm. In a row for small-nested varieties, the distance is 8-10, for varieties that give three or more bulbs in the nest, 10-15 cm.
Onions are demanding on moisture, especially during the period of intensive growth of the bulb, up to the beginning of lodging of the feather. Depending on the weather, 8-12 irrigations are carried out per season. Stop it 3 weeks before harvest.
Excessive moisture leads to the growth of the feather, not the bulb.
After each watering or rain, it is desirable to loosen and weed the weeds.
The first feeding is carried out at a leaf height of 10-12 cm, the second - after 20-25 days.
Hilling or pushing the soil is not necessary. The less damage to the bulb, the better.
