PLEATED TOMATOES NAME AND DESCRIPTION OF VARIETIES
What is attractive about ribbed tomatoes, although unusual in appearance, but not very convenient to use? It turns out that they bring us many pleasant surprises. It is not without reason that they enjoy the attention of breeders, collectors and just gardeners.
WHAT CHIPS HAVE A GROWTH
Corrugated tomatoes have thick walls, a lot of dry matter, few seeds, a pleasant taste, often watermelon - sugary, granular - consistency. They are productive and mostly resistant to major tomato diseases.
They are treated in the same way as with the classics: dried, frozen, canned, salted. They are also used exclusively: they are cut into thin layers along the ribs and put on sandwiches, in vegetable cuts in even equal slices. Even from large segments, the pulp does not fall out.
Well, the cross sections decorate the dishes with openwork lace. There is almost no liquid in them, so a special chic is to bake slices of different colors on one pizza. And the slices are not only red, but also yellow, orange, purple, two-tone.
Bushes with fruits that look like Chinese lanterns are planted in flowerpots at the entrance to the site as a visiting card of the estate.
RIBBED TOMATOES - FROM MINUS TO PLUS
By the degree of ribbing, these tomatoes vary greatly. There are folds that are barely noticeable, as if slightly outlined, and there are deep, clearly defined ones. In some tomatoes, they are only at the stalk, in others they stretch along the entire fruit. Fan gardeners consider these ribs, and the more of them, the steeper the variety. The popular Lorraine beauty usually has 12-13 ribs, but sometimes it reaches 20 or more.
Such fruits seem suspicious - are they GMOs? But no! When creating varieties, breeders use the natural phenomenon of fasciation in tomatoes - the doubleness of flowers, which occurs due to stress (temperature changes, cold, heat, excess moisture) and is considered a disadvantage. But this is how to look, because fruits with a large number of seed chambers, retracted partitions and an uneven, winding surface similar to brains are tied from double flowers. In other words, ribbed specimens are born.
At first, they were valued for their symmetrical regular section, but they quickly noticed that the asymmetry gives the fruits a fantasy, quirkiness. Such elongated cross sections, similar to human footprints, were called “shoes” by breeders.
So not all bad things are bad. Disadvantages with a skillful approach can be turned into advantages, cons - into pluses.
UNpretentious EXOTA TOMATOES
Extravagant tomatoes only seem exotic, whimsical to grow. Actually it is not. Basically, plants obey all the rules of agricultural technology for classic smooth tomatoes.
True, there are still some features of care, but they do not require special skills. Experienced tomato growers are familiar with all the tricks, but in this case they must be observed.
Such tomatoes are certainly grown through seedlings, most often they are late or medium-late: they ripen for a long time - from 150 days. Although early ripe ones are also found. From sowing seedlings to planting in the ground, agricultural technology is no different from the traditional one.
Simple troubles arise after relocation to a permanent place. Plants are usually tall, so you need a garter to the trellis. They are powerful and bushy, they have to be formed in 2-3, sometimes even in 4 stems. It is more reliable to grow them in a greenhouse, although there are exceptions for the middle zone, and in warm regions, of course, you can do without shelters.
To make the lobed fruits huge, most of the flowers are ruthlessly plucked so that only giants can absorb all the nutrients. How do they grow up? Tomatoes weighing more than 100 g are officially considered large-fruited. For Chinese lanterns, the norm is 250-350 g. And this is not the limit, kilogram fruits are also not uncommon. Once, at VDNKh, the Senior Tomato club presented a record-breaking fruit - 2500 g, also in the form of an accordion. Apparently, large-fruitedness and heaviness in such tomatoes are literally “in the blood”.
Almost all corrugated tomatoes are not hybrids, which means you can get your own seeds. Once spent on a rare variety, and it will always be with you. Unpretentious, productive and ripening in our domestic climate. And you can buy almost any variety from tomato collectors via the Internet.

HISTORIES OF RIBBED TOMATOES TOGETHER WITH GEOGRAPHY
Varieties captivate with fascinating stories of appearance and distribution.
retro grade Radiator Charlie brought out by the owner of a small auto repair shop in the USA. In his free time, he collected a collection of tomato varieties and crossed them. From the ten most successful plants, a variant was obtained, the fruits of which, with their corrugation, by the way, not so pronounced, looked like a car radiator. A new cultivar with sweet grainy fruits of 300-500g led to an unexpected commercial success, making
Black and dark tomatoes are still rare, and if they are also corrugated, they are generally unique.
We are talking, for example, about the tomato Tim's Black Ruffles, or Tim's black corrugated (Tims Black Ruffles).
the author is rich. Even he himself was nicknamed after the tomato Radiator Charlie.
Exclusive varieties are often bred by amateurs, whose names are gradually forgotten, and the offspring live for centuries, becoming truly popular. So it was with the variety 1884. Four digits - the year of the flood in Virginia (USA). A local farmer fished out a tomato bush floating past with large fruits from a stream of water. Saving himself, he also took care of the plant: he saved and collected the seeds. The variety is grown to this day, so it is good and productive.
The Tlacolulade Matamoros variety is named after the picturesque city of the same name in Mexico, from where it spread throughout the world. Also old, high-yielding, tall and hardy. And today the variety type is already a multi-colored family with white, yellow, pink, red raspberry and even black fruits. There is also a two-color Tlacolula de Matamoros, similar to a pear with a yellow top and a red base. Tomatoes weighing up to 320 g are ready for harvest 95-110 days after germination.
Marvel Striped Tomato - striped miracle tomato of the Indians of Mexico. Beefsteak-type fruits, large (up to 500 g), round-flat, fleshy, with a minimum of seeds. The skin is painted with orange, yellow, pink strokes and swirls.
From Mexican tomatoes, thick juices with pulp and sauces are very good. At Tlacolulade Matamoros with white fruits fruit dessert taste. ancient grade Purple calabash (Purple Calabash) The Aztecs were growing as much in the pre-Columbian era. The tomato came to us thanks to American seed banks. Fruits with at least 25 ribs, purple-raspberry, weighing up to 300 g, with red-violet juicy and sweet flesh. This is one of the best tomatoes for stews and salsa sauces.
When the Spaniards at the beginning of the XV century. conquered America, they were captivated by these tomatoes, as well as by the spicy dish of them, which the Indians prepared from purple calabash with the addition of chili peppers, avocados and pumpkin seeds. The Spaniards called the dish salsa, which means "sauce" in Spanish. It is no coincidence that both the sauce and the dance, which have become classics, are called the same - salsa: both are spicy and incendiary and from many components.
Tomato (Reise tomat), or Traveler from Transylvania. It is not just folded, but literally composite, like the Friendly Family pie, which does not need to be cut, but can be torn off piece by piece. The fruit is similar to a flat garlic bulb, consisting of individual cloves that are easily separated, just like garlic cloves. The lobules are different in size and configuration, arranged randomly. The weight of whole tomatoes is 150-200 g, but they can reach 1 kg and consist of hundreds of fused fruitlets. Each is a separate tomato chamber. The variety is productive and bears fruit until frost.
HOLLOW TOMATO VARIETIES
Many people think that segmented tomatoes are always empty inside, and therefore ideal for stuffing. But this approach is not applicable to all varieties. Often the fruits are full, and you are tormented to scrape them - try to take the pulp out of a complex mold!
The early Ukrainian variety Puzata Khata (85-90 days from germination) with red pear-shaped fruits weighing 300 g, which can be grown in open ground, is famous for its hollowness.
If you carefully cut the top in a circle, then the insides with seeds are easily removed with it. The rest of the tomato is empty. The same thing happens as in the cooking of peppers. The walls do not wrinkle during baking.
ANOTHER SURPRISE
Heart-shaped ribbed tomatoes have an unusual property. They sing from within. The taste of fruits becomes harmonious when they are still green on the outside, only slightly pinkish below, and already red inside. Cor de Boeuf (Bull's heart) - mid-season variety, yields fruits up to 500 g. Suitable for greenhouses and open ground.
A new unpretentious hybrid of the "heart" type - F, Rugantino for spring greenhouses. Gives a lot of pear-shaped fruits weighing up to 200 g, even in extreme heat.
There is an obstacle when cooking some lobed tomatoes - they need to be thoroughly washed in cavities where dirt easily penetrates. No soft brush here!
