A NEW LOOK ON AQUILEGIA
Remember the gardens of our grandmothers, where compact aquilegia bushes, strewn with blue-violet flowers in June-July, looked out from different corners. But this plant can still surprise!
Not only have many interesting hybrid forms with bright flowers of various shades been bred, but also species specimens, it turns out, are good for health!
CONDITIONS FOR AQUILEGIA IN THE GARDEN
Aquilegia feels better in partial shade. In well-lit places, the plant weakens, and the flowering period is shortened.
Prefers moderately moist and loose nutrient soil.
After withering, the flower stalks are cut off, otherwise abundant self-seeding can drown out the more delicate species growing nearby.
Fertile soil is annually sprinkled under the bushes.
Plantings are updated every 5-6 years.
FEATURES OF REPRODUCTION OF AQUILEGIA
Seeds are sown in autumn or spring (after monthly stratification) in open ground or for seedlings in boxes. The optimum temperature for germination is + 16-20 degrees. Shoots appear after 25-30 days. Young plants bloom in the second year. Often aquilegia gives abundant self-seeding.
The division of an adult bush (3-5 years) is rarely propagated, because the plant has a fragile tap root. In early spring or late August-early September, the bush is dug up, almost all leaves (except 2-3 young ones) are removed, leaving petioles 5-7 cm long, and the root system is carefully washed from the ground. Then the taproot is cut lengthwise with a sharp knife into pieces so that each has 1-3 renewal buds and a sufficient number of small roots.
Cuttings are taken in the spring, choosing shoots with incompletely blossomed leaves. Suitable ones are carefully broken out from the bottom of the stem of the mother plant, the sections are powdered with a root formation stimulator and rooted in washed river sand in a greenhouse or in a bed covered with a film.
