Torenia (photo) cultivation, planting and care, my flower reviews
HOW TO GROW THORENIA?
You will definitely fall in love with this plant for its long flowering and simplicity of agricultural technology. Its pretty bell-shaped flowers of blue, violet, pink, purple, lilac and yellow color with an expressive pharynx will also impress.
Torenia is a perennial plant of the Norichnikovaceae family native to Southeast Asia. It forms compact, strongly branched, spherical, with a large number of shoots, bushes 20-30 cm high, during the flowering period strewn with bright flowers, similar to miniature gloxinia. In our climate, torenia is grown as an annual plant.
In order for it to bloom in June, it is necessary to sow seeds for seedlings in February - March. I sow granulated seeds of tornia at the beginning of March in peat tablets, 1 seed in each superficially (she does not tolerate transplantation and root damage). I moisten from the sprayer, cover with a film and put in a bright place for germination. I do not allow the shell of the granules to dry out, I regularly spray them from a fine sprayer.
At a temperature of 23 ... 25 ° C and good lighting (but without direct sunlight), seedlings appear after 7 days. Some time after the emergence of seedlings, I rearrange the seedlings in a cooler place (18 ... 20 ° C).
If you purchased ordinary seeds, and they are very small in threnia, also sow them superficially and lightly sprinkle with vermiculite or sand. In the phase of 2-3 true leaves, dive into separate pots. And when the seedlings reach 8 cm, pinch the seedlings for better tillering. A week after picking, feed with complex fertilizer. With the onset of stable heat, in June, hardened seedlings of torenia can be planted in open ground with a good clod of earth.
But still, I advise you to grow this plant, as I did, in pots and in containers that can be taken outside. The fraying also looks organic in hanging baskets. In open ground, it does not develop well. The fact is that the foliage of fraying is very capricious. If the plant is not satisfied with something, it can shed its foliage. And bright sunlight, direct rays of the sun, getting wet after a downpour, a draft can not arrange it. In addition, the plant is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate zero and sub-zero temperatures. If the temperature drops below 5°C, fraying may die.
For long-term preservation of its decorative effect, it is necessary to maintain stable soil moisture and protect it from extreme heat. If fraying is planted in containers, flowerpots, balcony boxes, it can always be removed from the sun, hidden in openwork penumbra, watered in time.
If you still decide to plant torenia in open ground, place it in raised flower beds. The soil should be loose, water and breathable, fertile, neutral acidity. Good drainage is a must.
Torenia develops well in diffused lighting conditions. In the shade, the bushes become loose, and the number of flowers decreases. At noon, it must be shaded from the scorching rays of the sun.
Torenia is moisture-loving, does not tolerate overdrying of the soil (to preserve moisture, the soil can be mulched). Remember to water it regularly, but keep it moderately moist. In conditions of severe waterlogging, fraying can suffer from slugs, suffer from root rot, and in conditions of heat and dry air, it can be damaged by spider mites.
Twice a month, it does not hurt to feed the fraying with mineral fertilizer.
Each flower stays on the plant for up to two weeks. And fraying blooms from June (for me - from the end of May) until the end of August.
I was pleased with their flowering two varieties of fraying: Kawai Blue White (with violet-blue flowers 3 cm in diameter with a pronounced lemon-yellow spot in the center and spectacular green foliage similar to basil) and Kawaii Pink (with lovely flowers with a diameter of 2,5-3 cm of pale pink color and a white throat, a yellow spot on the lower “lip” is also present). The bushes are miniature, branched, perfectly aligned, the foliage is lush.
In the autumn, before the onset of frost, I tried to bring pots of fraying into the room, as I wanted to save it, but nothing came of it. Therefore, I grow torenia from seeds every year as a flyer and do not bother with wintering.
