Turn - prickly plum: both fence and fruits, cultivation and reproduction

Blackthorn FOR FENCE - FEEDING AND GROWING
Like many summer residents, I got a plot to have my own green corner where you can take a break from the urban stone jungle. And in order to have more greenery in the country, he even “made” a living hedge - from blackthorn. But the hedge is far from the only thing that the turn gives us.
LOVE DOES NOT LOVE
Turn is a type of plum. It is distinguished by frost resistance and undemanding to moisture. But to the sun, it is very demanding, and it does not tolerate wetlands. Often this plant is used, as I am, to create a thorny hedge. Not everyone loves its small sour fruits, but pastries with them and jam are very tasty. In addition, large-fruited varieties are now bred, which are suitable for the preparation of various desserts, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
THE TURN IN ADDITION TO THE FENCE
To make a thorn hedge, in the spring I collected the root shoots of this plant from the neighbors. I dug holes for seedlings in autumn at a distance of 1,5 m from one another. In the spring, I poured a mixture of humus and rotted manure into them. I also added specially prepared eggshells. For a turn, she is a delicacy!
I watered the planted plants abundantly, compacted the soil in the near-stem circle with my foot. It is important! If the wet earth tightly compresses the root, the plant is more likely to take root. I made sure that the seedling was at about the same depth as before transplanting. Each turn is tied to a peg.
At first, I watered the plantings once every 1-2 weeks. When new leaves appeared on the seedlings and the trees began to grow, I reduced the amount of watering. And when the summer heat subsided, he stopped watering altogether. Fertilized the turn with humus and horse manure, but only the first two springs, so that the bushes grow faster. Over time, the impressive fence along which the turn was planted was replaced by a low fence. Now thickened thickets of thorns successfully perform the protective function. In summer, they form an almost continuous wall of prickly greenery.

FROST IS SWEETER
Separately from the hedge in a sunny place, I planted several cuttings of large-fruited thorns. If the work with the hedge is reduced to the systematic removal of root shoots, sanitary and formative pruning, then the large-fruited turn requires more attention.
In spring and summer, I water the trees well about once every 2 weeks. In autumn, I bring compost and rotted manure into the trunk circles, dig them shallowly, although this stimulates the growth of overgrowth. To combat it, along the perimeter of the trunk circles, I dug strips of slate to a depth of 15-20 cm. This significantly slowed down the spread of overgrowth. I note that there can be very little root growth, if you do not dig up the soil near the blackthorn at all and if it is as comfortable as possible in the place where it grows.
When, after 4-5 years, large-fruited sloes began to bear fruit more or less abundantly, the harvest went to the preparation of jam, marmalade, jelly, kvass and tinctures. We eat the turn and fresh, but it is better to show restraint and wait for the first frost - only then the fruits lose their astringency, become soft and sweet.
TURN - AND BEAUTY AND BENEFITS
If the large-fruited sloe is mainly used for food, then the thorn fence supplies us with raw materials for medicines. For example, the flowers of the plant brewed as tea (50 g per 1 liter of water) help with kidney diseases. As a laxative and diuretic, we use tea from young sloe leaves - we collect them immediately after flowering.
I am very happy that I grow turn. Without much hassle and maintenance costs, he provides my family with food, medicine, encloses the site, and even decorates it. It is especially good during the flowering period.

The turn is growing, big. It blooms for 5 years, but the flowers fall off, there are no ovaries. A plum tree grows nearby, an apple tree, a pear tree, a currant stand nearby - everything is fine with them. Maybe the turn doesn't like the neighborhood? Blooms well, no fruit. Cut down or something to do?

Dear Nina Petrovna! There are several options: either cut it down, or leave it for beauty, or plant another turn. It definitely needs a pollinator nearby - another turn compatible with it. Plums rarely pollinate it.
