NYMPHOES - "CHILDREN" OF WATER - HOW TO GROW IN A POND IN THE COTTAGE?
Nymphaeums, or water lilies, are one of the most common and beautiful aquatic plants. Thanks to them, even a small garden pond will become a touching romantic vacation spot. How to grow and where to keep until spring - the children of water, tells the candidate of biological spiders Lyudmila ULEISKA (Yalta).
CONDITIONS FOR GROWTH
Nymphs are plants of the deep-sea zone. Depending on the variety, they are planted, and more often in containers they are gradually immersed in water to a depth of 20 cm for dwarf and small specimens, over 50 cm for medium and large ones. The containers at the bottom are fixed with stones, and the substrate in the flowerpot is sprinkled with gravel so that the plants do not float to the surface.
Water lilies love open, well-warmed places by the sun.
As a soil, silt or fertile heavy clay soil is suitable for them.
To maintain an attractive appearance of water lilies, yellow leaves and wilted flowers are removed in a timely manner during the summer and in September.
With the onset of cold weather, in October, containers with nymphs are taken out of the reservoir and dug in the garden in loose soil, covered with spruce branches. More heat-loving varieties are placed in basins with water and brought into a frost-free room, and tropical species - in a winter garden or to a balcony door. In the south, winter-hardy varieties of water lilies are left in reservoirs.

METHODS OF BREEDING NYMPHEA
Nymphs are propagated by seeds (they bloom in the 3rd-4th year), but more often by dividing the bush or part of the rhizome in June. In warmer regions, this process can continue into August.
When propagated by a rhizome, a part with 2-3 renewal buds and a sufficient number of roots is cut off from it. Slices are sprinkled with crushed coal. De-lenks are planted in a tray with clay, which is placed in a shallow container with water.
Overgrown adult curtains are divided. The plant is removed from the container, the daughter bushes are separated with a sharp knife or spatula, planted in separate containers in fresh clay soil or a special substrate and set in a permanent place. The water should be no more than 3 cm higher than the sprouts. The containers are kept outdoors until the end of summer, and transferred to a cool room for the winter. In the spring, the bushes are planted in containers and gradually, as the leaves grow, they are immersed in a pond.
In the south, water lily delenki overwinter in the pond.
TIPS FOR BUYING NYMPHEA
If you purchase a plant without a tag with variety characteristics, check with the seller at what depth it is intended for planting.
Remember to find out what the surface area of the leaves is. If they can occupy a large part of the water surface, the plants will suffer from a lack of oxygen, and the leaves, twisting into a tube, will bulge above the water.
WINTER IN THE POND
Cold-resistant varieties of nymphs can winter in a reservoir at a depth of at least 0,7-1 m, only if the water is not drained there. In such conditions, all planted buds and young leaves are preserved, as a result, flowering occurs earlier. Otherwise, the plants are removed to the basement.
