METHODS OF PRUNING REPAIR RASPBERRY IN AUTUMN

It’s the end of September, and my remontant raspberries are still bearing fruit and ripe with all their might, so I’m not in a hurry to pick up the pruning shears just yet. I will trim it 2 weeks before frost, right at the same time as planting the garlic. I trimmed regular raspberries almost immediately after harvesting.

Remontant raspberries bear fruit on both one-year-old shoots (green) and two-year-old shoots (woody). Therefore, there are two ways to grow and trim it.

1 METHOD OF PRUNING REPAIR RASPBERRY

Basic, and that's how I do it. Gives one harvest.

In the fall, a couple of weeks before frost, we cut out absolutely all the shoots at the root and mulch with wood chips, sawdust or humus. In the spring, young shoots will grow, on which the bush will devote all its strength, and we will get one harvest in the fall - very good, with large berries. The disadvantage of this method is that in the northern regions and in cold autumn the berries may not have time to ripen. If you have such a problem, there are solutions: plant earlier varieties; during the season we select the 3-5 strongest shoots and leave only them, cutting out everything else; we plant regular raspberries and enjoy the summer harvest.

2 METHOD OF PRUNING REPAIR RASPBERRY

It is for obtaining two harvests - in summer and autumn.

All 2-year-old shoots that bear fruit (woody) are cut off at the root without regret. We remove small shoots and weak shoots. We leave 3-5 good shoots of the current year, they are green (we harvested them in the fall). They will have a harvest next summer. We cut off the top in the spring.

And on those new branches that grow over the next summer, the harvest will ripen in the fall. But it will be later, smaller and finer than when pruning in the first way. Such a bush needs to be fed very well, since it will spend a lot of energy on producing two crops. Therefore, this pruning method is still more suitable for the southern regions.

Four varieties grow

I use the first method, because to get a summer harvest we grow regular raspberries. Of the remontant varieties, I chose four varieties: Orange Miracle, Caramelka, Samokhval and Bryanskoe Miracle. I do not prune the remontant raspberry bushes that were planted this year.
