THE CABBAGE IS CRACKING – RAIN AND DROUGH TO BE TO blame!

It rained throughout the beginning of September. The grapes withstood such extreme conditions, but the cabbage could not be saved - almost all of it burst. Could this have been avoided?

The main reason for cracked heads of cabbage is the alternation of drought and abundant moisture. That is, if you don’t water the plants for a week, and then fertilize the garden bed with water, the liquid simply won’t have time to distribute evenly, and the heads of cabbage will burst.

Unexpected rains have a similar effect, which can cause harm even when you regularly water the cabbage bed once every three to four days. It’s easier with grapes: their roots lie at a depth of 40-50 cm, and not every rain can wet the soil to such a depth.

HOW TO AVOID CABBAGE CRACKING?

Cover the cabbage with film during periods of prolonged rain. At the same time, be sure to ventilate the bed when there is no rain.

During drought, after watering and loosening, mulch the soil with 7-10 cm of straw or sawdust. This will protect the bed from overheating and drying out.

After setting the heads of cabbage, eliminate nitrogen fertilizers. If necessary (if the cabbage grows slowly), leave fertilizing with boron, potassium and phosphorus (according to the instructions).

Harvest on time, taking into account the varieties and varieties of cabbage, since even with proper care, overexposed heads of cabbage will crack. Harvest early varieties from the end of June, mid-season varieties in August, and late varieties in September-October.

If the rains don’t stop for too long, and the film doesn’t protect you from excess moisture, try this trick. Grab the head of cabbage with both hands, pull it up a little, and then make gentle rocking movements in different directions. However, keep in mind that you can tear the roots only when the cabbage is already fully formed and has a dense root system.

IF THE HEAD IS STILL CRACKED

Unfortunately, it will not be possible to save the bursting heads of cabbage. Cut them off as soon as you notice the crack, otherwise the forks may burst all the way to the stem. Use spoiled vegetables for preparation or ferment.
