GROWING YALTA ONIONS BY SEEDS
Last year I read an article about how the author grows Yalta onions. This article interested me, I wanted to try to grow this onion myself. After all, I also once brought it from the south.
Yalta onions are really juicy and sweet. Due to the low content of essential oils, it lacks bitterness and pungency. It is not suitable for heat treatment, but is irreplaceable for salads and vinaigrettes.
I purchased onion seeds of the Yalta variety in the spring. I grew it through seedlings, since it is a mid-season variety and takes 4-5 months from germination to harvesting.
At the beginning of April, I held the seeds in a cotton cloth under running hot water for about a minute, squeezed them out a little, wrapped them in plastic wrap and placed them near a warm radiator. After 3 days they hatched.
I sowed them in moistened purchased seedling soil (I took one at a time and carefully laid them out in the intended rows at a distance of 1-1,5 cm from each other), sprinkled them with the same soil on top. Cover the container with film and place it in a warm place. Ventilation was carried out periodically to remove condensation. After the entrance loops appeared, the film was removed and the container was placed on the windowsill. Germination turned out to be good.
I planted it in open ground on a bed fertilized with humus and wood ash in May after the threat of frost had disappeared. I made shallow grooves across the bed every 20 cm and planted seedlings in them with a distance between plants of about 10 cm. I watered the plantings.
Subsequently, weeded weeds and loosened the soil. The plantings were watered constantly, preventing the soil from drying out. Water was spilled between the rows so that it did not fall on the leaves.
The last watering was carried out three weeks before harvesting. Although the variety is resistant to most diseases and pests, the development of powdery mildew is possible with excessive moisture.
Despite the fact that the year was difficult for gardeners, large flat-round bulbs with a concave bottom and a fibrous root system grew. The weight of some was more than 250 g. Their outer layer is purple, the inner scales are thick white with a soft pink tint. The feathers are large, dark green in color with a waxy coating.
I harvested the bulbs by digging in mid-August. This is a salad onion, it is not stored for a long time, we will use it first. It is valuable because it strengthens the immune system, lowers cholesterol levels, and improves skin condition.
As it turned out, growing Yalta onions with seeds is not difficult. I was satisfied with my harvest.
