GROWING SEDUCTIVE RASPBERRY
For several years now, visiting the ancient city of Uglich from time to time, I sometimes meet a woman at the market or on the embankment selling unusual seedlings and bright red berries that look like large strawberries. She calls her seedlings raspberry-strawberry. Despite the high cost, I was also tempted to purchase such a garden wonder.
I also visited this woman’s garden and was convinced with my own eyes that the exotic hybrid was not a myth, but a very real and very pretty plant. But it seems incredible that a hybrid between a shrub and a herbaceous plant could be obtained. I have come across unverified information that raspberry-strawberry is a hybrid obtained by human crossing garden strawberries and raspberries. However, in fact, this miracle culture, known in Europe since the century before last, is just a species plant created by nature without human intervention.
Raspberry-strawberry is a perennial subshrub of the Rosaceae genus, the closest relative of raspberries. It was brought to us from mixed forests on the mountain slopes of East Asia, that is, its homeland is Tibet, China and Japan. Therefore, the fantastic hybrid is called by many names: roseleaf and Tibetan raspberries, raspberries, club raspberries, as well as Chinese, Himalayan, zemmalina. Perhaps, somehow else - there is no common name yet, but there is a Latin, that is, the scientific and official name of the species - Rubus illecebrosus, that is, tempting or seductive raspberries. In my opinion, a very suitable name for this plant!

RASPBERRY-STRAWBERRY forms spreading, rather lush bushes with very thorny shoots. In nature, they say, the shoots reach a height of 3 meters, but on our soils and in temperate latitudes the height of the bush is 0,5-1,5 m. Underground stolons grow very quickly underground, and the owner of the plant digs them up every year and takes them to the ground. on the market, according to her, for 30 years! The price of seedlings is very steep; in a small provincial town there are almost no people willing to buy a hybrid. The only hope is for tourists, especially since Uglich is one of the pearls of ancient Russian cities.
Aboveground shoots of Tibetan raspberries are similar in appearance to the raspberry ones themselves, but 30-90 cm high (the last figure for the southern regions). The leaves are carved, very similar to large meadowsweet leaves, rough. They are also similar to the leaves of rose bushes (hence one of the names - rose-leaved raspberry). Raspberries and strawberries bloom throughout the summer. The flowers resemble strawberry ones, but are more decorative: with white, cream and pink petals, large (4 cm in diameter). In the center of the corolla there is a dense cluster of golden stamens. Flowers can be arranged singly, but more often they are collected in panicles, and flowering mainly occurs on the tips of the shoots, only sometimes flowers bloom on adventitious branches.

The fruits deserve the closest examination (and tasting, of course!) - the size of an average plum, multi-drupe, weighing 15 g, bright red, juicy. Their surface is glossy, grainy, carmine red in color, just like ripe strawberries. The berries ripen by August, but the peak of the main harvest occurs in September. The ripe pulp is sweet and sour, reminiscent of raspberries, strawberries, and pineapple, but in the conditions of our “middle strip” short and not very sunny summer, the berry can remain bland and almost without aroma, or even completely sour, in its ripe form. But there are no allergies from it!
AND STILL EXOTIC is our everything! In addition, you need to know how to use the berry correctly. Raspberries and strawberries reveal all their main advantages after processing. Even if the summer has not been successful and the fresh berries leave much to be desired, you should add sugar to the crushed berry mass, and it will begin to exude a rich pineapple-strawberry aroma. Jellies and jams made from it are exotic and tasty: strawberry notes are clearly felt in them. If you add fruits when preparing any fruit (pear, apple, plum) jam, it will acquire a sweet taste, fragrant aroma, bright color, that is, it will become exquisite. Freshly picked raspberries and strawberries make fragrant dessert wines, compotes, jelly and purees. Dried berries can be used to prepare infusions and tea, and berry decoctions have the same healing power as traditional raspberries. Dried fruits can be stored for a long time in a closed glass container - all the beneficial qualities are preserved.
Raspberry-strawberries, like their relative the raspberry, live and thrive in organically rich, well-drained soil. We choose the planting site taking into account the fact that the plant is originally a forest plant.
It loves well-lit, or even better, completely sunny areas that are sufficiently moist. Agricultural technology can be compared with growing ordinary raspberries. The best time for planting young seedlings is autumn, although early spring planting is also successful. Since flowering bushes and fruit set need a lot of water, it is worth watering the bushes generously in spring and early summer. Closer to autumn, the bushes need to be planted on economical food rations: the stems should ripen by the cold weather.
In our middle zone, the bushes go into the winter unpruned; late in the fall they can be bent to the ground. In colder regions, the stems can be cut off for the winter - the plant will fully recover by summer (very similar to remontant raspberries).
The shrub bears fruit on annual shoots, so they prune the plant in a way that is more profitable for the summer resident. The bush takes root easily in comfortable conditions. It bears fruit in its second year. And after another three years, the plant actively forms shoots, which it reproduces. Here it is necessary to take into account the very powerful natural power of this plant, which very soon will try to capture as large an area as possible (like ordinary raspberries, however). Who does not want the active spread of Tibetan raspberries throughout the site, dig a board or slate along the length of the planting row to a depth of 30 cm (underground stolons lie there).
AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY that will make the work of a summer resident easier is mulching.. Deciduous, peat or straw litter will protect the roots from overheating and dehydration in the summer, and will protect them from the cold in the cold winter. The thickness of the mulch is arbitrary, but the thicker it is, the more reliable it is. In addition, additional fertilizer.
This beautiful shrub can be used as a fruit and ornamental crop at the same time. The berry garden easily turns into a beautifully flowering border or a dense dense hedge, and even with brightly colored fruits.
In short, I recommend trying to plant raspberries and strawberries on your site: perhaps its fantastic fruits will suit your taste, and in general the ornamental shrub will suit your yard.
