I WILL TELL YOU “GRANDMOTHER’S SECRET”
I grow many varieties of tomatoes in my garden. This year I decided to plant Granny's Secret variety and I don't regret it one bit.
Tomatoes huge in size, sweet, meaty and very tasty. Of course, they are not suitable for pickling, but they are just right for eating and preparing salads.
This is how I grew them: I sowed the seeds in prepared heated soil. Immediately after sowing, I placed the containers in the warmest place. When the first true leaves appeared, I planted the seedlings into larger containers.
I watered young plants 2-3 times a week. The seedlings grew well and quickly. Next you need to properly plant it in the ground. According to my observations, it is best to plant on cloudy days. If the weather is sunny, the seedlings need to be shaded with newspapers.
I prepared the furrows, watered them generously and planted the tomato seedlings in the garden. At the bottom of the holes I placed dried and crushed orange and lemon peels, dried banana peels (I prepare all this during the winter), a handful of onion peels and a handful of rotted sawdust. If you have fish waste at this point, be sure to put that in as well.
All these additives will soon begin to rot and generate heat. With this method of planting, the root system of plants is formed at depth, which means it is not susceptible to spring cold snaps and summer heat. In addition, it is also protection against possible diseases, which are mainly provoked by sudden changes in temperature.
Immediately after planting, a mini-greenhouse made of plastic bottles with the bottom cut off was placed above each plant. If it was warm and sunny during the day, I unscrewed the bottle caps and screwed them on at night. I removed the bottles when the threat of frost disappeared.
I always leave the first two stepsons on each plant.. When they grow up, I pin them to the ground to strengthen the root system. I tie the tops of these stepsons together with the two main stems to a support, thereby forming a bush of 6 stems.
At intervals of 2 weeks, I feed the plantings strictly at the root with this solution: I fill a barrel with chopped nettles and dandelions, add a bucket of manure to the mixture and fill everything with water. To speed up fermentation, I cover the barrel with film. After about 10 days, the fertilizer is ready. Before application, I dilute the resulting fertilizer with water 1:10 and water the tomatoes at the rate of 3-4 liters per 1 square meter. m. I carry out the first watering 7-10 days after planting the seedlings. My plants really like this treat.
To protect against diseases, I spray the bushes as soon as they take root with a pink solution of potassium permanganate. After 10 days - with a solution of boric acid (20 g per 10 liters of water). After another 10 days - iodine solution (10 drops per 10 liters of water).
Of course, I don’t forget about the mandatory watering, loosening the soil and removing weeds.
I can safely say that Babushkin Secret tomatoes pleased us with their harvest and the wonderful taste of the fruit.
